Subject: how to replace upsteam O2 sensor??
IP: Logged

Message:
So my new O2 sensors arrived via UPS yesterday. I replaced the downstream sensor with no problem.

I can't seem to find a way to get both hands up to disconnect the connector. Removing the actual sensor from the exhaust pipe is no problem.

I think I may be able to reach it if I remove the front right tire, remove the plastic protection piece that covers the suspension components. I thought about that last night, but I could not figure out how to get the little plastic pins out that hold it to the vehicle. The one I tried, I broke. Perhaps it's better to break them all and replace with a better designed after market one?

anyone have any suggestions?

It's an 02 QC 4x4.

Theres a red clip that must be released before pulling apart the harness ,I used a flat screwdriver and pushed it upward than was able to seperate both pigtail ends its definitely pain in the a!s better to do if you have access to hoist in the air makes things easier otherwise be pateint and proceed . Thats how i did mine which is 02' SXT CC with 4 02's and be sure that you don't have a CALIFORNIA emmison truck like mine is pigtails are different so watch for this and I went throught the fender with the wheel off move plastic shield off bit easier somewhat wear some mechanic gloves so you won't take some hide off LOL.. Good Luck...

Yeah i figured out the red clips. My problem is that with the truck up on jack stands I can't reach the upsteam connector with both hands to snap it and pull the connection apart. I can only reach it with 1 hand.

how did you get that plastic cover off the wheel well?

You have to pop the plastic snaps out. They sell replacement ones in the HELP section of Autozone. There are cheaper places online to buy them in bulk, I'm told.

There is inspection door on left fender well just pops out or you could remove the whole fenderwell liner which is held on by 12 plastic pins which might be plastic rivits that can be cut with cutters and replaced with new can get at most auto fastners or go to a body collison shop might able to sell you some or maybe FREE?? these engineers didn't give us any mercy for this one keep your cool and you get em..

I figured removing the plastic guard from the front wheel well was the way to go. I've been consumed with other projects. I'm planning on stopping by advance tonight and picking up some replacement plastic rivets.

I like the ones on my wife's old grand am. It has a pin in the middle that flared the rivet. Pull the pin up, it unflares the rivet. Push it in and it flares it.

Done!

I jacked up the truck, supported it on jack stands. Removed the front passenger side tire, turned the steering wheel and removed the plastic guard. I was able to crawl under and grab it with my right hand and put my left hand through the opening where the guard was and pull apart the wiring harness.

i picked up a pack of 15 plastic rivets from advance for around $5.

My first attempt at connecting the new o2 sensor was not so successful. When i turned on the truck to test it with my scanner i got a DTC .. circuit malfunction for the new o2 sensor. I was finally able to get a good solid connection (heard it click into place) on my second attempt.

The P0135 shows as a pending DTC. I know that a pending DTC is a condition that the computer saw but does not meet the criteria to set off the MIL.

Does anyone know what the "cycle" is to determining a pending DTC and what conditions will cause it to be removed from pending?

Dan sounds like you might of got a bum 02 sensor or it shorted out the heating element inside or did the sensor get dropped or mishandled ?? these things will trip your MIL lamp. Also if the sensor parameters reads more than 3.125 amps max or less than .25 amps for than 10 seconds will trip your MIL lamp (2) consective engine CYCLES computer will store this and trip your MIL lamp until corrective actions are taken

Dan also check relay and fuse make sure working and be sure that you didn't screw up any of the wiring especially the wire lead for the heating element this will trip your MIL lamp . A good manual will tell you where and how to check these out ..

The sensor is good. As I stated, when I first went to connect it, it didn't connect securely. This is when I got the code. After I connected the sensor securely, the DTC was a pending DTC and did not illuminate the MIL.

After a few starts (not sure how many) the pending code is now gone. no DTC's.

Dan good to hear things are cleared up for you sometimes are common mistakes because we work to fast not knowing before to late. If you have that code again use that guideline I posted for you or anyone that has this issue like you did. Also thats good to know your PCM is working properly and picking up faults right away .

yep, very good news!

I am still trying to find out what the criteria are for setting a pend DTC and removing a PEND DTC and what all DTC's have a PEND feature.

i know it some manufacturers it's set by a number of starts.

Dan, In order for some DTC's to become stored as a malfunction this has to happens more than once .If a malfunction condition required to occur more than potential malfunction is called a PENDING DTC you are having. The DTC remains pending until the malfunction condtion the required number of times to make the code stored. If the malfunction dosen't occur after a set time the PENDING DTC will be cleared. Does this make sense to you ? I hope ??

Dan the conditions are there I would say because there may be an underlie issue other than whats going on for your 02's to be pending maybe there not reading there paremeter differences that I listed for you they may work but still pend until fully recovered operation for the pending to be cleared otherwise I would check out all your sensors each one by one be sure working and within tolerances. Also be sure that yoour 02 wires are secured in in each pigtail end for the proper fit you probaly checked it but I would look at it again to sure and I would check the relay for your upstream 02 be sure its good and fuse for your 02 sensors is good all these with a good digital tester or good reputable shop you could trust if you wish. Also if under 8 yr or 80,000 miles this is covered by Federal Law free from the dealer to be fixed don't let them tell you NO .
