I heard that most cars that broke track records or hold top records are automatics, is that true? if so then why such a hype with manuals?

Manuals may have less parasitic power loss, but are harder to launch consistently.

also, the guys racing auto's are usually running the ol' 2spd Powerglide. very simple and very durable.

If were talking about funny cars, good luck manual shifting through a few gears and concentrating on keeping a serious dragster straight down the track in under 6 seconds. It sounds insane enough using an automatic.

Like mentioned above... automatics are great for consistently launching the vehicle, but I do think that manuals are much funner to drive.
