I took my truck to the dealer this morning to have them evacuate my AC lines since I have done some work on the system and had to open it. I figured, what the heck, have them fill it too while I have it in there. The kid quoted me $175 for the entire service, saying "the price of a can of 'freon' (his words, not mine) has gone up to $25 over the last month or so". So I told him no thanks, I'll fill it up myself.

What BS, I just priced a can at $5.99.

Anyway, when filling it myself, don't I need to put an additional can of PAF oil or something? And, how many cans of R134a should I add starting from an empty system? I don't think I have any specs on the AC system capacity, and would rather not just guess willy nilly based on the pressure gauge.

Funny, they only charged me to evacuate the system; picked it up and must to my surprise the A/C was blowing cold. I figure the tech must have charged it up anyway without putting it on the bill.

Was it one of you guys? If so, thanks...

Your system shouldn't take more than 2 to 2.5 pounds of R134A from a fully vacuumed system the sticker on my 03 R/T says 1.83 pounds.... And be careful of repair shops .....R134A is NOT Freon ... its Refrigerant ..... R12 and R22 are Freon based ... and cost a LOT more...

It is all refrigerant.Freon is Duponts trade name.Another manufacturer uses the name Genetron but refrigerant is really what it all is.

I was just gonna say what Jr said.
FREON was Duponts tradename. Kind of like Coke is what we all call Cola Soda and Bandaid is the word we all use no matter what brand bandage :p

One thing to remember is a lot of people think a can of referigerant is equal to 1 Lb. But it is usually 12oz in a can. So if your truck says it takes 2 Lbs, then convert that to 32 oz of system charge, etc and then try to do your best figuring how many oz you used with them 12oz cans.

Also. When you pierce your can, or use an adapter to connect, purge the air out and then have the line feeding from the BOTTOM of the can. That way it leaves the can in LIQUID FORM. Don't worry though.. If you only crack your suction gauge the liquid will flash to gas state by time it gets to the compressor.
If you remove the refergerant form the top of the can, the liquid will "boil off" inside the can as it comes out in gas form. the BAD THING here is the pressure in the can will drop really quick and equalize to what your suction side of your system is running at and you will have a hard time getting all of the refer out of the can. Do it in liquid form and you will get almost all of it out before the pressure even drops much and you will get almost all of it form the can.

just my .02

Funny thing is my AC has not felt like 100%. I don't drive my Dak on a regular basis so I have been too lazt to hook up the gauges/thermometers to it and check.

That's counter to all professional advice. Yes, cracking the valve slightly will reduce the chance, but adding in liquid form can "slam" the compressor blades and cause damage. The directions tell you to hold the can upright and warm it in a bucket of water, not more than 125F. If you are just patient, you will not damage the system, and can get all the refrigerant out.

2 years ago I bought a case of 24 12 oz, cans at Sam's for $20.This year it is around $60.I was in there late winter and a 30# jug was $65 so I bought a jug. This week 30# at Sam's is $129.They are ripping us off just like the oil companies. No reason for R 134A to be this high.

I charge every system weather it's 134a car or R22, R410, etc liquid form the bottle. I never slug a compressor. On large systems I would have to crank every valve wide open to get enough flow from the tank of liquid refer through the tiny hoses to slug a compressor.
On a car compressor you just need to keep the valve closed a lot more. I just open it until the suction gauges rises a little.

If you use a valve near the connection at the tank it will flash almost all of the liquid to a gas quickly as it drops to the suction pressure.

Warming up the can kinda sucks when you don't have to LOL!

Some of the new "Blended" referigerants like R410, you can NEVER EVER remove upright in gas form as it will ruin the entire tank of refer because it being a BLEND it consist of several different types of refer mixed together. They boil off at different rates and therefor would leave the tank at different rates thus ruining the belnd left in the tank and the blend charged into the system.
