Subject: tow hitch with dual exhaust

Well, apparently the first time I tried to post this it didn't take....so here it is again. I have an '01 4x4 club cab with 4.7L. The previous owner put dual exhaust with tips that come straight out the back on each side of the spare tire. It has no receiver hitch. I'd like to put a receiver hitch on, and wanted to know if anyone has had any trouble with any certain hitch and a dual exhaust or know of any that won't fit for certain. It looks to me like the standard class III won't work, but a hidden style might.

Also, this is my first Dodge that I've owned, are there any tips or tricks to getting the most life out of my Dakota as opposed to any other vehicle? I've heard that on the Dakotas the weak spot is the trannys, is that so, and what can I do to improve the life? Thanks!

Maybe you could relocate each of the rear tail pipes to go out at an angle, like the stock pipe did and the left one going around the spare tire.

That's how I did mine and mine came with the good hitch. Not the POS one they put on the NEW Dak's with the so called tow package.

Also, another idea. If yours just has the duals split off of one single pipe, like most trucks have these days being FAKE duals, you could just run out a single pipe at an angle to make installing the hitch easier.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'd like to keep the exhaust as it is if possible. Its looks good and sounds fantastic. Part of what sold me on the truck. I'm not certain if it is a true dual or just dual exits, but based on previous systems I've had, it sounds like true duals. I've not had the truck long, and have been out of town extensively and haven't crawled around underneath yet. Anyone else with any similar setups? Thanks!

I got a Reese class III/IV with a MAgnaflow SI/DO in stainless steel. There is maybe half inch clearance between the hitch and the dual pipes and the pipes exit at a slight angle rather than straight out the back because the ends of the hitch cross bar prevent the pipes from being perfectly straight. The pipes had to be tweaked for it all to work together. Doesn't look bad but it doesn't have that perfect, straight-as-an-arrow look duals on other trucks have. Some of the OEM Mopar hitches look like the cross-bar is recessed more up behind the bumper and all you can see is the receiver opening below the bumper. I think if you got duals you want one that installs like this.

Personally, I really wish I would have gotten dual rear exit that angles down behind the tires. Would have been an easier install and they'd look like they're supposed to instead of being at a small angle when they're supposed to be straight and parallel.

I put on a high capacity second cooler and had a full flush with Mopar ATF+4 at 50,000. Will do a full flush again at 100K or so. Transmission works perfectly and I have to imagine it's now good for at least 200K of service with no problems.

I might also had, last time I got rear ended in addition to having my bumper pads repainted I had to have my pipes re-adjusted and I haven't been able to get them to look the same as they did since they were first installed since then. Seriously reconsider the routing of the pipes, as side exit or behind the rear tires means there's one less thing you'll have to fix in minor rear end collisions.
