Hello I have just under 125K miles on my 2000 4.7 and I haven't serviced the tranny at all. (i know...i know) I know I shouldn't do a flush as that might cause problems by bringing all those shavings and crap back into the tranny. But should I go ahead and have a shop drop the pan and change out the filter??

Because I just called a shop and the guy that worked there said it'd probably be better if I left it be...was just wondering what y'all thought about this. What would you recommend I do??

If the fluid looks ok, I would change it. Having 2 filters in the tranny makes a difference. The atf+3 (which is what you probably have) is semi-synthetic, I believe) Just a pan-filters change will be fine.

Oh forgot to mention: it feels like the tranny is just barely starting to slip. I think that's why the guys are telling me to just leave it be...

Going with the new information you gave I would do a flush being very picky who does it. Normally I would say don't flush it but your added information about possibly slipping tells me to do the flush. Reason being your on the edge of troubles and a good flush at the worst will let things go bad as they are doing or possibly fix the problem and save a pricey rebuild. Not aware of any band adjusting on your trany but I would be looking at good reliable Dodge dealer mechanic or service manager for the posibility

Slipping could be a band adjustment is needed. That should be done with every fluid change.

From my experience, while a lot of Mopar parts are too expensive to buy and knock-offs are OK and cheaper, DO NOT do this with your tranny fluid or filters. Only Mopar ATF 4 and Mopar filters.

Again, With that many miles you might have toped of your tranny in the past. If you used +3 this can give you shifting problems and WELL NEED FLUSHING. +4 is the mopar required tranny fluid. There are other brands now making +4 but I can not attest to the quality. I have Amsoil syn in my 99 4x4 Dakota with no problems.

At 125k miles, tranny never been serviced and
just now starting to slip would tell me to get
rid of it NOW!

Sad fact is, you're gonna have nothing but
problems if you start *trying* to service it to
save it and now that's it's beginning to act up,
it's gonna only get worse.

You'll be hard pressed to find ANY tranny shop
that knows what they are doing AND the so called
"Factory Rebuilds" are JUNK!

UNLOAD IT NOW!

That is the typical answer from someone who doesn't know anything and is an idiot.

If your not an idiot, you would take it in for service right now. Even if it does fail, just have it rebuilt. A rebuilt transmission will cost alot less than a new truck. Plus, rebuilds along with brand new transmissions, come with warranties. That means if it fails, you get it fixed for free.
Take your rig into a reputable transmission shop as soon as possible, and have it serviced. If it fails, take it to the same shop and have it rebuilt.

I believe you, but why would the situation warrant having it serviced and risking tranny failure? I just don't understand why both the guys at two different shops told me not to service it...Was hoping maybe you could clarify a bit for me.

You asked for opinions and that's what you got. I stand by mine. Doesn't mean I'm correct. Your situation is a guessing game and that includes those 2 shops. You tell me why you won,t risk A service job against a rebuild. If the service job turns out saving you about 1,800 you will be a happy camper. If you rebuild first you'll never know if you waisted 1,800 bucks or not. As a rule, I never do guess work. I find the problem and fix it once. In your case, you created the problem by not doing your service work. On the other hand, If you cared so little about a 25,000 dollar new truck investment NOT to service it then I guess 1,800 wouldn't mean much. I'm not trying to cut you down here. Just my honest opinion. Good luck

be hard pressed to find ANY *reputable*

back up their work?

Here is the deal.
If you do nothing and it has a problem - it will fail.
If you drop the pan and clean it out and change filters THEN do the flush you won't suck any junk up AND you will have all new fluid.

As far as the slipping, is it from a start OR between shifts? Worn out fluid can do strange things.

believe it or not, i know a few reputable tranny shops in my area. i also know a few on the other side of the country in my home state. im sure there is a few where he lives. or at least one. ask your friends, family, co-workers. someone can recommend one. usually a family owned transmission shop thats been in business for a long time is a good place to go.
getting rid of the rig and buying a new one is never a good idea unless you constantly have to fix it, or the thing is just plain worn out, or you just want a new one.
