What do I have to replace for my 8.25" rear end to handle 500hp or more? How much will it cost for a shop to install 4.11 gears? thanks

411 gears will be weaker then 355,s or 392's . reason is the pinion is smaller making it weaker. If I was you I would be taking measurements and looking for a HD rear end in the wrecking yards. What you get will depend on what will fit reasonably. Find a hot rod shop and bend there ears a bit.

Ford 9" will handle pretty much whatever you can throw at it.

If your gonna keep stock, go with 4.10 or 4.56. Less torque is required to turn the ring gear, which makes them (relatively) STRONGER than 3.55 or 3.92, and able to handle MORE power. Relatively. Shorter "torque arm".
But it's a dodge rear end, so your still taking your chances.
A Ford 9-inch like Vince said, is your best bet.

Josh.... With all due respect. 4 10 and 4 56 are not the way to go. 3 55 is the best in the dodge rear end. The smaller the pinion the higher the torque on it. He said 500 HP . 3.55's will get him down the track so much better with that much power. He will have enough trouble keeping from spinning off the tires with out lower gears. Lots more speed before shifting and stronger gears. I still say go with a bigger HD rear end. Example. My cousin built a 54 Studebaker 2 door business coup using a full blown chevy v8, 39 buick rear end and 39 buick floor shift transmission. The trany was non sincro so it had to be slam shifted. Never did tear it up and these high gears carried him to 85mph in firt gear at the snap of a finger. It was the 2nd fastest car in the state of montana at that time. This was several years ago. By the way. The fastest car was a firebird with the exact same setup for gears and motor. They were best friends. With 500 hp, you need high gears, not low ones.

Just get the 9 1/4 from any late Dakota, Durango, etc. It's a straight swap, and plenty strong.

Seems to me, before anyone can say for sure what will fit to replace brad's 8.25 - he's going to have to tell us what he is working on. The 8.25 has been used in different width Dakotas - they're not all the same. Unless maybe gen1dak knows what he is working on from another post ? The info just isn't presented here...

Nope, don't know. was looking at it from the point of him getting the proper width unit on his own.

600hp and 300 shot and stock readend still going strong. I was going to do the 9" but had the axles drilled for the forn car bolt pattern and i'm leaving it at that. I didn't want to spend the money for the change over. I have a 12 inch wheel and posi and thats it.
