Well back to the drawing board. I'm searching for any other suggestions because I've tries everything here. Replaced the cables and the battery is holding just fine. Made it another 2 blocks after letting it run in the driveway for 30 minutes. So it is only happening when I'm trying to move. It loses gas and power.

It did start several times after it died today but would quickly die again. After towing it home it sat in the driveway for about an hour or so and I just went out and it fired right up and ran like there's no problem. I'm quite certain it would die again if I tried going down the street. I'm frustrated. Anyone want to buy a Dakota?

Not really. It gives a 1 - 2 when you start the test followed by a 5 - 5.

Well Todd, I believe it's fitting. I didn't know how to briefly describe my problem and get some of these great Dakota people to respond. Oh, plus I'm a writer and headlines are real important.

Did you mention the fuel filter?

Is your Dak fuel injected, or a carburator?

Still sounds like an intermittent fuel problem to me.

Good Luck, I know it can be frustrating!!

The fuel pump has just recently been replaced and that's where the filter is. I'm getting 40psi pressure on the fuel. It's fuel injected and has the multi point injectors so it's not too likely all six clogged. I'm starting to fear that I'll need to replace the computer which is a prety expensive guess, but we've eliminated almost everything else. The absence of any meaningful codes is a real pisser.

what you really need is a scantool w/ somekind of datalogger that could record the events when your truck flips out. some shops do have them.

How about the coil, mine wouls run for a while then just die, no codes, but had fuel and no fire. Was a real pain in the rear to find. the coil shouldne be that expensive. I would take it in and have it tested, or buy a new one. It's cheaper than a Computer....

My sons 90 dak was stalling out intermitenly and there was no spark and no fuel pressure. After some research on allpar.com I replaced the Hall Efect sensor, a $45 dollar dealer part, and it has been fine for a month now. Takes about 45 min to install under the dist. rotor. Truck has a 3.9 six with FI. 170k

Breadman2,
My 95 uses a pickup coil instead of the Hall Effect Sensor and we've replaced that. Otherwise it sounds like the problem. The coil has been replaced.

Since we've addressed most of the possibilities, I'm now wondering if one of the parts that we've replaced may have been defective. I can't even keep it running long enough to get it anywhere. But hey! I'm getting great mileage since I get pulled everywhere I go.
