Here's a question that has been kicked to death on this board for many years...but I must bring it back up.

I want to install a puller fan on my 99 5.2 that will work only when the A/C is turned on. I also want to leave the stock clutch fan in. Now, I know how to do the wiring install, but I am looking for advice on the fan type and any tips/tricks for making more room in from of the stock fan in order to mount an electric fan of reasonable size.

Any input would be welcome.

What you're looking for is an auxillary fan to use when the heat load is high. You really don't need much for that. And it really only needs to run when speeds are less than about 30mph or so.

My '01 has one stock. I'd go to the bone yard and pick up a used one.

You could run a relay off the A/C compressor wire. Or just a simple on-off switch. Or both - which is what I'd probably do.

when installing an aftermarker fan,
consider making a frame to support
it's weight, not relying on those
"plastic zip ties" that are included
to mount it on the rad.

I used a 3/4" flat steel bar to mount the
fan on, bolted across the rad using the
factory shroud bolts, then a couple
of those 'thru the rad' zip-ties on
the bottom of the electric fan to keep
it flat against the radiator.

all the weight on the bracket,
zip-ties just to keep it positionned flat

mesure before ordering,
space available if it's going in front
of clutch fan and inside original shroud,
and overall diameter considering your custom homemade bracket.

as .boB said, you can go to the salvage and grab one from an '00 - up and mount it in there and use the a/c comp wire to activate the relay for it. the factory units work very well and are pretty slim so you'll have no clearance problems.

Since I have a 03 that means I can take off my clutch fan and be fine? I live in Florida and tow my 1500lb boat every now and then. How will it do in heavy traffic?

Does it automatically kick in w/ the ac or not? How hard was it to uninstall?

you cant have both. it's either or for you. not enough room. been there, done that. you cant even bolt on a pusher because of the lack of room in front of the radiator.

just get the e-fan and do away with the power robbing clutch fan.

Thanks to all for the reply's. I'm just concerned about the heat build up. I live in central Georgia and I do often pull a 19' boat.

I have a hard time believing a single electric fan could handle the heat coming from a V8 without a back-up (clutch fan).

ON the 99 there is enough room between the condensor and rad to fit a small thin fan - had one on my 99.

I have an 01 QC 5.9 and have run only the stock ele. fan since day 1. Tow a 4-5k boat/trailer to the keys every year and have never had a problem. Only time it ever started to warm up was in South Beach stuck in traffic w/AC on in the summer - shut the AC off and it cooled right down.

jjj,

So, I'm thinking about a 12" fan that's approx. 2" thick to put between the radiator and the condensor.

I think that should help out some. The hardest part will be modding the radiator mountings to make room for the fan.

I think 1/4" worth of washers/spacers chould make enough room.

There is one fan that fits perfectly between the condensor and rad, if I remember tomorrow I'll look and see what model it is.

It just zip ties in and works good that way because it is small and light.

Why are you doing just the fan for AC?

I used two, the small one and a big one behind the rad - then eliminate the mechanical fan. Good for almost 2 mpg across the board increase.

Because the 5.2 generates a lot of heat.
