I have a 2002 with the 4.7. I've heard that the fuel filter is in the gas tank. Is this true? Is it one of those "good for life" things dodge has put in our trucks? Is it actually good for life?

You actually have two fuel filters, and both are in the tank.
The first one is at the inlet of the fuel pump, and the second one is in the fuel pressure regulator, mounted on the tank.
According to Dodge, these are lifetime filters, and unless you routinely fill up with dirty gas, they should last a long time.
I mounted an external filter in the fuel line between the tank and the engine, just to make sure nothing got through to the injectors.

One important thing you can do to protect your truck from trash in the tank. Never ever buy gas at a station that has a tanker dumping fuel in the underground tanks. Go somewhere else. There is a lot of dirt and water at the bottom of all gas storage tanks. Dumping fuel in creates a lot of terbulance in the fuel lifting the debree off the bottom and you will pump this trash into your truck if you do not give it a few hours to settle down.

I must have misunderstood you OBIO3, where do you find a gas station with above ground storage tanks... that sounds like a really dangerous situation. I cant say as I have ever seen any gas stations with above ground gas storage? Am I missing something...are you joking?

Man, the bus has left and you are still at the station.. He said that when you fill a storage tank, you agitate anything in the bottom of the tank- If you refill right away, you fill with this"stuff" going into your tank. Wait 6 to 12 hours before using that station. (let everyone else suck it up).

well they usually come once a day, so unless you actually see the truck on location(which I agree it does say)you still are looking at a 25-50% chance that it will still be aggitated on the 6-12 hour wait time. So I guess I am expected to memorize delivery station gas times and never get gas outside my area or I am looking at up to a 50/50 chance of bad gas... lol. I understand the point, but not usually a problem. If water is in the tank, then it means that gas is leaching out, and if that is happening, the gas station has a lot more to worry about than a few people complaining about a rough idle.

OB103, where do you live where there is above ground gas tanks? I live up in the northeast and unless your searching pretty hard, your not going to find one up here. Like mccamp said, it does sound like a pretty dangerous situation, I don't doubt there's some restrictions around here about having one.

He never mentioned anything about above ground tanks. How many stations have you seen with above ground tanks? I do take exeption to his comment though. All fuel from the storage tanks is filtered before the gas pump.
