Well I found my oil leak last weekend after looking and its coming from my rear main seal. Its not a very big leak yet but it will only get worse.

Can I simply drop the oil pan without removing the motor/trans? I have a 99 5.2 SLT not 4X4. Anyone ever done this chore before?

I will be trying this in the summer.

I think it's a two piece seal so that means you should not have to remove the transmission, however you will have to remove the oil pan as well as the rear main bearing cap to expose the the seal. The bottom piece comes out easy, however I have known the upper half to stick and put up a fight.

I guess my real question is:

Can I get the oil pan out without pulling the motor or raising the motor up?

I know I will most likely need to remove the Y-Pipe.

Thanks

I really dont know about that I have only put them in a couple 3/4 ton rams for work. However I didnt not have to remove the exhaust or jack the engine up, it only required me to remove the starter and the two side braces that run from the bellhouse up to the frame. I would imagine that it is a tighter fit in a dakota. However just soak everything with PB blaster to avoid breaking anything (like studs in the manifolds).

You will have a tough time with this repair. I had to replace an oil pump on a 2wd once at work and almost pushed the truck off the hoist trying to raise the engine enough to get the pan out. I ended up doing the job on a creeper with the motor mounts off and still not enough room to get the pan off and had to reach around the loose oil pan to pull the pump out. You may get some room if you remove the distributor but the floor tunnel does not allow much room for raising the powertrain. Either way it will be a frustrating job. Just make sure it is actually the rear main leaking-in nine years at a dodge dealer, I have never had to replace a rear main on a 5.2 or 5.9 for any reason. It is very common for the intake, oil sender or valve covers to leak in this area. Try to avoid this job if you can. Hope this helps.
