does anyone knwo off hand if the "teeth" on the tone ring are different quantities from a 1990 vs a 1995
do they change with gear ratio size?

and if i change them out, will this throw the ring gear out of concentricity when i unbolt the tone ring?

btw, i was just wondering if they were different and the 95 computer reading the 90 tone ring was making my speedo off by about 7 mph

You need to get someone who has an OTC/SNAPON/Mopar scantool to program the (pinion factor) in the controller to correct the speedo. The pinion factot is shown by tire size in the list and has to be done whenever you change tires, controllers or flash update the vechicle.

but what i dont get is nothing has changed, all tire/gear ratios are the same on the 90 vs the 95

so the 95 computer/sensors are reading off the 1990 axle

when did the problem start? when you swapped controllers or axles? when did you noticed the speedo reading low? I see you list 30x9.5 tires on you truck did anyone change the speedo factor when you first swapped tires? let me know when you can

i swapped out all the controllers, electronics and everything from the 95
all the wiring and sensors running back to the axle, (the one speed sensor was changed as well)

the 1990 came with 3.92 gears, the 95 was 3.55s
my tires are 2" larger than the stock 95 tires, but i have the 3.92s so it should come out correct

the speedo is actualy reading fast by 7mph or so
if it were a result of the tires it would be about 5 mph off the other direction like it used to be with the 1990 setup

and i noticed the speedo was off after i did the drivetrain swap from the 1995

so the body is a 1990, the whole drivetrain with the exception of the axles is all from the 95

the front and rear axles are from the 1990, i kept those because they had the 3.92 in them

what i meant was what size rear was in the 95 that you took the drivetrain out of? there are different number tone rings in the 90 and 95 some have 104,108 and 117 teeth

1990 8 1/4 and 1995 8 1/4 for the dakota had 104 teeth part number 4384226. now you have to look at the trannys and the speed sensor setup on your truck do you still have the transfer case from the 1990?

yeah, its currently buried under like a foot of snow though :)

hhmmm, i wonder what else could be throwing it off
because the dash, gauge cluster, engine, tranny, t-case, is all from the 95
my last hope was there was something different on the tone ring that was throwing it off

the speed sensor on the 1990 was cable driven for the speedomoter, the 95 is electronic so thats why the whole gauge cluster was swapped out

does the 3.92s and the 3.55 axle ratio change the tone ring tooth count?

i would swap the speed sensor adapters & gear assy from the 90 to the 95 and you should be were you were with the 90 5mph low. when you take the adapter out you'll notice the gears are different colors and teeth count. if you want a diagram from the parts catalog send me a message to my email posted here and ill send you the page from the catalog with all the exploded views

the only problem with that is as i said before, the speed sensor on the 90 is cable driven for the speedometer, and the 95 is electronic
i no longer have the cable, actually i cut it in half to take it out :D
or are you talking about the sensor and tone ring???

i think the gear for the speed sonsor on the transfer case is hobbed right into the main shaft in the T-case isnt it?
and the 95 and 90 were different in that repect
i tried swapping the shaft from the 90 t-case to the 95 t-case because the spline count was different and i wasnted to jsut use the driveshaft off the 90, but i ended up having one custom made instead

maybe ill just leave well enough alone and jsut deal with it being off, or i could spned the money and get a jet module to correct the speedo, i think superlift makes them as well

thanks for all the help though

did the 90 speed sensor have a harness attached also? cable and electric? your 95 setup has only electric but it is the same basic sensor and the pinion and adapter assy under it should come out easily. when you get a chance look closely at your sensor. as i said before i can send you the diagrams to make easier for you to see. if you do know someone with a DRB or OTC scantool you can try to adjust the pinion factor in the 95 controller to see if you can get closer to correct speedo reading without changing the adapter and pinion gear under the sensor assy

right now its cold and i dont have a good place to work on it, ill see if anyone has a DRB or OTC, some of the autopart stores around here carry them for free diagnostics
