Subject: 4x4 turning troubles, looking for advice

Hey, I have a 2004 Dak 4x4 4.7L with a full-time transfer case (AWD), only 32,000 miles. My issue is I hear a knocking noise in the front passenger wheel while turning at various speeds. The noise is loud almost like a woodpecker makes, the faster the turn, the more rapid and loud the knock.

I have already replaced the front steering rack assembly & tie-rods twice with new OEM parts. The lower ball joints and sway bar bushings as well with OEM as they had alot of play according to Dodge. Dodge can't figure out whats wrong and keeps guessing parts (i.e. inner axle assembly, wheel bearings, CV joint, etc.). Does anyone know what this issue may be from? The driver side wheel doesn't make a sound.

Also the 4-wheel drive doesn't work properly when turning, the car jerks forward and the wheels skip. While turning you hear rubbing and the car slows down while giving gas, it could be related. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Have you had the front driveshaft checked? I had a problem that sounds somewhat the same. It was the Carden joint at the rear of the driveshaft.
I had to replace the shaft as the joint itself is not sold seperate.

That's those big hompin' tires you got that are rubbing against the fenders when the wheels are turned.

Blacduckota, if it was a driveshaft problem, wouldn't that prevent me from using 4wd at all? What was your estimate to get the driveshaft replaced. I am out of warranty, so regardless of what it is, I am going out of pocket on this one.

The tires are not the rubbing issue or I would of had the problem before, the setup is still stock including wheels and tires. I am going to put it in a shop for inspection and I just wanted to give them an area to start. Driveshaft and CV joint are top of the list. Thanks for the posts.

Is your Dakota still under warranty? If it is, I'd just take it in to your local stealership and tell em to fix it.

I maxed out the warranty, the 3 years came before my 36,000 miles, and it was only 3 months ago too. I don't suppose the axle/cv joint or driveshaft is covered under the powertrain warranty?

Your "knocking" description sounds much more like CV joints then anything else.

Try this, if you can hear the noise outside the truck, have someone drive it forward slowly while you listen and look. When the noise happens, note the wheel position and have them keep moving forward. If the noise happens again 1 wheel turn ahead, then you know it's (most probably) between the wheel and the diff's ring gear. That would tell me to look at the CV joints on both sides of the right front axle first.

If the noise is happening faster then 1 wheel rotation, then more then likely it's between the front diff and the xfer case. In that case I'd be looking at the CV joints there.

As for the turning issue, that sounds much more like a xfer case problem with the case being locked (4Hi or 4Lo), as opposed to it being in AWD mode.

If you're knocking was coming more from the xfer case area, then I would suspect an xfer case problem was causing both, but since the noise is coming from the front wheel, I would suspect two different problems.

Then again, you could have a malfunctioning xfer case, where it's not actually in AWD, but is in 4Hi. If that is the case then I could see some of the CV joints along the path getting trashed due to the stress of 4Hi on dry pavement.

When my driveshaft was causing trouble I had my truck in 4X4. This was the only time there was pressure on the shaft. Your drivetrain warranty should be 5 years or 60000 miles. My warranty was 5 years or 100000 kilometres. Canadian eh! I was over the warranty by 15000 clicks. New shaft is 500.00 Canadian at the dealer. I picked up a used one for 175. The truck it came from only had 11000 clicks when it was written off but the shaft was not damaged. Hope this helps.

Sure sounds like CV joint problems and your
stealership overlooked the problem because it
was in warranty.

Bet you a 100 bux you take it back to the same
stealership they find the problem this time and
will gladly empty your wallet!

I did some reading up on my warranty book and the CV joints, transfer case, driveshaft, axle housing, axle shafts, output ball bearing, etc. are all covered under the 7/70 powertrain warranty (which I still have).

Last time I had it at the stealership they pointed the finger at the steering rack assembly and tie rods saying they were causing the knocking ($1800 estimate). Time before that when the basic warranty was good, they said noise was normal. They are on the third strike, I'm going in with ammo this time, else chrysler will get another round of calls and letters.

The knocking happens before one wheel revolution. The noise varies with the degree of the turn and speed, it isn't always constant with the revolutions of the wheel.
