Subject: 98 dak 5.2l won't idle
IP: Logged

Message:
My 98 dak 5.2L sat for a while (~2 months) unused.
This morning I had to charge the battery to get it started. It wouldn't start unless I had my foot lightly on the gas. And it won't idle unless I had the foot lightly on the gas.
THe battery is charged now, but it won't idle.
Any suggestions???

i takes a while for the pcm to relearn the idle. i would have that battery load tested. a weak battery will cause a rough/no idle.

daddio is right. I had the EXACT same problem as you in both of my Dodges. After new batteries problem disappeared. Low voltage from battery will cause problems with computer and idle and fuel settings.

Thanks.
Do I have to reset the PCM? I did that once when I changed coils some time back, but forgot how.

OK< I just re-read your posts. Since I bought this truck used a year ago I have no idea how old the battery is and they don't last forever. It seems like it should hold a charge better than it is. I'm going to get a battery as it just might be on it's last legs.

Thanks little jer and daddio!

to make sure that the baattery is good or not you should have it load tested. Otherwise you could be changing it for nothing. some batteries last a long time. i still have the original battery in my '00 QC. 7 yrs old last month and it's still kickin'.

Do you live in AZ. daddio? Cold is one of the battery's worst enemies. A battery in a cold climate will usually go before the same battery in a warmer climate. I live in OR. and have replaced 2 batteries in my 99' Dak.

Well, it could possibly be flooded. Did you
ever think about that?

from his description it doesn't sound like flooding. If it was flooded it wouldn't start at all.

UPDATE

New battery fixed it. The old batter was significantly smaller than the OEM size (which is what I just purchased) and no doubt had a lower rating for CCA.

Thanks everyone!
