Why wouldn't a 4.7 2WD Dakota get near 22MPG highway as well? If the 4WD gets 18, then the 2WD should get closer to 22!
The best I ever got was 19MPG once when I had the stock gears. But I got two axles, two driveshafts, and a transfer case turning all of the time. Even though it's part time 4X4. It still all has to turn!
But I didn't buy a Dakota for MPG. I bought it because I like V8's and the sound you ONLY get from a V8. The torque that can bust the tires loose form a dead stop (my 4.8 Chevy 1500 2WD never ever spun a tire or had power until well over 3,000 revs) and the Dakota made it a little more sporty than a full size. Of course at times I kinda wish I had a full size.
Now that I don't tow a 7,700 Lb toy hauler anymore, it's nice still just having the perfect size of a Dakota and a V8. And it don't have al that dorky PLASTIC crap screwed all over the top of the engine like them Vortec and new Dodge's have. I want to see my engine when I open the hood. Not a plastic top covering up everything!

My '04 Dakota CC 4X4 4.7L usually gets around 16 mpg with mixed city/highway driving. Last summer I took a long trip and got 21 mpg on one tank with all freeway driving. So, I can vouch for what Graphite is saying.

The only thing I've seen since I got my Dak that has real power in a smaller package with big brakes is the new Tundra. 401 ft-lbs of torque with a six speed auto and 13 inch disk brakes all the way around. Good stuff, far better than anything else in a 1500 truck. MPG's are irrelevant if you need a real truck otherwise,buy an Prius etc.

well more power to you if you can get that good out of your Dakota!! I never have got that with the 00 modle that I had and it was a 2x4.

After taking a second look at the Colorado/ Cannyon. I decided not to buy neither one untill gas hit 3.10 a gallon. I really didn't notice how small they were untill just a week ago. I guess I didn't even pay to much attention to the size becase I need something with better fuel milage.
