Here I am being stupid again. Parts store possibly misinformed me. Adding helicoils to secure caliper on front brake of 95 Dakota. Parts store sold me 3/8-16 helicoils which are not going into the hole. How large should the hole be tapped to? It seems to accommodate the helicoil it would have to be much larger than it is.

My helicoil kit came with the proper tap and installation tool. If you didn't get that, go back and buy the kit.

Here's an example: http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/hel5521-6.html

Ditto what .boB said...I got the same kit he linked to and it came with everything except the drill bit to drill the hole out. And on the heli-coil package it will tell you the proper drill size you need.

If you try to do the job with a hand drill there is probably a 99% chance you will screw it up.

Yeah...it's hard with a hand drill. What my dad recommended is either drill a perfectly straight hole in a block of wood with the proper sized drill bit and then use it as a guide when drilling out the hole (do the same thing for the tap--or at least tap it with the tap against the block of wood). Or since he works at a plant with a machine shop, give him the drill size and he'd drill out a block of steel for me to use as a guide. Unfortunately in order to fix my transmission I HAVE to use a hand drill...or drop the transmission and have someone with a giant ass drill press do it for me. Which is why I've just been letting it leak. My exhaust is in the way of the bolt so in order to reach it, not only would I have to use a had drill, but I'd also need to use some long extensions.

So, does anyone know what size hole or helicoil I need for this hole?

Depends on the bolt size...easiest thing to do is take the bolt into a hardware store or something and tell them you need a heli-coil kit to repair the threads on the hole that came out of. Make sure you get someone who knows what they're talking about and not some kid who's gonna play guessing games.

That was the problem. The idiot sold me 3/8" helicoils and it turned out what I needed were 8mm x 1.25. And that was at the car parts store when I handed the guy the friggin bolt and he took it in back and still gave me the wrong ones. O'Reilly Auto Parts. That is why I felt like an idiot cause there was no way that was going in the hole. Thanks all.

The 8mm x 1.25 takes a 21/64 or Q tap drill. I would lean towards the low side if I were using a hand drill. Like GB2000 said, use something to keep the drill straight. Better yet, remove the bracket and have someone else drill it in a press or mill.

I did the same thing you did. I was gonna mention the metric helicoil, but you beat me to it.

Anyways, I drilled with a standard hand drill and had no problems. Don't worry about using a drill press. If you have a good drill bit it will follow the existing hole, even if you have the drill at a slight angle. Thats what pilot holes are for.
