Subject: I need tires!

Message:
I have a 2000 Club Cab 4.7 and I currently have Toyo Open Country ATs on it and they don't work that good in snow. They seem to clog up and act like a slick in the snow, especially in heavier amounts. I would like some recs as to what would be a better, more aggressive tread but one that doesn't wear out quickly. Anybody have a brand of tire that digs in the snow? Thanks in advance.

TOYO OPEN COUNTRY M410. They make it in a passenger car version then in the bigger truck sizes they call it a truck tire. Ride will be firmer than what you're used to from stock Goodyears. After 40,000 miles they'll still grip well but you'll hear them squeal just a tiny bit more in the corners. In snow and dirt you'll feel like you're in 4wd even when you're not.

At 16000 miles they have well more than half their tread life still left.

If I didn't have these I'd have ponied up more for the Bridgestone Dueller AT REVOS.

I'm in Hamilton, Ontario. We get snow. This past week we got
about 35 inches in 2 days.

I drive a 2001 QC 4.7L 4x4.

From May 2002 to Oct.2006 I had 31x10.5 Bridgestone Dueler
AT revo's on. They wore out after 50,000 km ( 37,000 mi) and
were acceptable in the snow when new but at half tread they got
loud on dry pavement and slippery in snow and slush.
(never again )

In Oct 2006 I went back to Michelin LTX m/s tires ( had them on
a previous 2wd truck and got 115,000 km [85,000 mi ] on them)
.
They are full tread of course but I had no problem pushing
through 3/4 mile of unplowed 15-30 inch drifts this week.( yes
it was fun !)
As well, I pulled a Sunfire and a Civic back to their driveways
after they only managed about a hundred feet before becoming
road-blocks themselves (idiots) .
My tires scrambled for grip but they dug through impressively
and haul those tin cans right back home where they belonged.

Added bonus ....they're really quiet on the highway.

My only negative comment about them is that under very hard
breaking and foot to the floor take-offs the rears seem to give
up grip sooner than the Bridgestones did.
I guess I'll just have to mature a bit to compensate.

Good luck !!

My math was a bit off last night.
50,000 km is more like 31,000 mi and
115,000km is more like 72,000 mi.

And ,for the doubters, yes 30 inches .
Thankfully the snow was powdery light and averaged 15 inches
but there were drift peaks as high as the tops of the headlights
that I punted through.
I also have a Powertrax locker in the rear diff. that I forgot to
mention.

I'd love to post some pictures but can't seem to get them to
show.

I use Michelin LTX M/S. Best all around tire I'v ever used. Reasonably quiet on the highway. Handle very well, and grip dry pavement much better than the original tires.

I'v driven long distances in heavy snow that have almost shut down the highway. No problems at all. In Dec, we had a couple of blizzards here. I made it to work and back home without any problems at all. Even pulled a few people out of snow banks.

They have about 45K miles on them now, still have plenty of tread.

I have the Bridgestone Deuler A/T Revos. I got just under 50,000 miles. I have had a similar experience as hammerdak. I don't have alot to compare to, but they handle all the snow you can throw at them when they are new. Mine also didn't get loud until about 35,000 miles. Even thogh they are almost gone, they still handle very well on dry pavement. If I didn't have 4x4, I would have already replaced them for this winter.

I am gonna do some research, but I will most likely buy another set. As a bonus (and not a part of my decision making) they look good on the truck.
