Subject: room for atv in quad cab
IP: Logged

Message:
hi, i'm planning to purchase a dakota very soon, probably going to be a 98-02 or somewhere around there. now i'm buying a truck to haul around my atv, a suzuki 250cc. so its a pretty average sized atv. my question is would i be able to fit that in the bed of the truck if i had the quad cab model? it seems somewhat short and i just want to be sure. thanks

Not sure how big of a bed the QC has...if it's a 6 1/2' bed, it should fit depending on the model ATV. I have a Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4 and it just BARELY fits in my bed. If it's too short, one of those "bed extender" things that turns your tailgate into extra length will prolly make it fit.

I think our QC beds are more like 5 to 5.5 feet.

My ATV goes in, but I can't close the tail gate.

Damn! No wonder all the QC owners are requesting a bigger bed on future model Dakotas...lol. I was thinking they were requesting an optional 8' bed.

Yeah...5-5.5' wouldn't fit much. Maybe a REALLY small quad. I think yours [Graphite] are around the same size as mine...maybe a tad smaller lengthwise since you don't have the racks.

5.5' beds on the QC's. it's a trade off. more room inside for less room outside. take your pick.

I bought a quad ATV last night. I could have closed the tailgate if I deflated the tires...

What's your left foot doing?

Or get a Quad Cab and pony up for the bed extender. Room for 6 inside AND 7 feet of bed space.

Check out a hitch-installed bed extender, such as this

Only 6 inside Eddy...I'm sure you can squeeze more than that in there. =P

SR,
That hitch-installed bed extender would scare me...having the cargo hanging THAT far off the back of the truck has got to be putting some serious weight BEHIND the wheels. It looks like if someone went with one of those, some helper springs would be in order. Looks like it'd be quite useful in adding extra cargo space though. What's the legality of one of those though? With it sticking out that far, do you think the owner would need to put a red flag on it (like when someone is hauling lumber and it's hanging a couple feet off the bed)? Just curious...not trying to spark a debate or anything...lol
