Subject: strange noise when accelerating
IP: Logged

Message:
i have noticed this noise for almost as long as i've had my truck, about a year now, and i'm just finally getting around to asking about it. when i accelerate quickly and put some load on the engine, not necassarily WOT but close, i hear a noise that i can best describ as a rattling sound coming from the engine or trans. it does this whether warm or cold. it doesn't do it if i just rev the engine, i have to be driving to make this noise. i'm worried that something is loose inside the motor or my timing chain (do 5.2 have chain or belt?) is ready to fall apart. i have a 98 Dak CC auto 4x4 with a 5.2. i've checked the undercarriage and the exteranl parts of the truck and i haven't found anything that could be causing this. any idas before i go waste a butt load of money at the dealer?

Do you know what "pinging" sounds like ?
Have you ruled that out ?

That's probably it. Try a higher octane fuel and see if that makes a difference.

i do know what pinging sounds like and this definitely isn't a ping. also i generally run premium gas and it makes the noise regardless of what kind of gas i use. i also noticed that i'm starting to burn a bit more oil over 3k miles than i used to. i know i need to replace my pcv valves but i'm not losing to much from them. i went through about a 1/2 quart in 3k miles.

If there is a hole in your intake plenum gasket, that would explain why it could still ping on premium; and the excess oil use. Looking down your TB, can you see any oil ? Still convinced it's not pinging ?

i will have to check that out as soon as i get a chance. i am still sure 99% that i'm not hearing pinging. i've worked at a ford dealership for 3 years now and i'm pretty sure i know what pinging sounds like and this aint it. to give you an idea of what it sounds like, i initially thought it was a loose heat shield or something like that. but everything seems tight and if it was a heat shield it would make the noise over bumps or general driving to, not just while accelerating under load.

one thing i have thought about but have no way of checking is if my piston rings are shot maybe? i did suck in water once while wheeling enough to stall the motor out for fifteen minutes. that could explain why i only hear the noise on heavy accel and also the oil consumption. would this seem realistic?
