You might want to wait 4 or 5 years before purchase while they get the bugs worked out of it.

Each of us has an opinion, so here is mine.

The 05 to 07 style is so ugly I wondered if the designers have brains. Plus they went back to drum brakes on the rear. So bad of a truck I was immediately sure I did not want another Dak. I have an 04 QC 4x4 and like it. The Durango looks suck big time too.

The 08 looks real stylish. Don't have specs on it, but it looks like a big step back to sensibility. If I was to get another Dak then perhaps an 09, after the bugs are fixed.

Other than that I am looking at a Nitro if they are any good. Want to downsize.

Maybe that's why the front of the new Dak looks like a Nitro so they can both be ugly together.

Trust me they couldn't F-it up any more than it already is. I'm going to keep my '01 tell the tires fall off and the engine blows out. Or I could buy a Ford F-150.

I hear the D-Body Dakota are pretty gutless in power including the V8.

I think dodge has a better model in for the 2008 year, the Nitro face looks more bold. More power, better MPG's, and a remote starter standard is a nice addition.

I agree the front end has not looked good since GenIII. After looking at the '08 a few times I will admit it's an improvment over the '05 design.
I won't really know for sure until I actually see one though.

As for engine output I think too many comparisons are made with full size instead of within segment. Some people want more and more power, more and more towing/payload, taller, wider, and longer. For me, if I wanted those as a priority, I'd get a Ram or equivalent full size. Keep in mind the Dakota is supposed to be a mid size which means it has some balance.

The new Hp and torque they are quoting for the '08 4.7 is similar to motors with LARGER displacements only one generation back (see numbers on bottom). IMO, it's great for a mid size truck.

Because it's a mid size, I would want improved handling/agility and increased fuel economy over the larger full size and give up some power and towing/payload. With the coil over design supsension, the handling/agility should increase. Fuel economy is supposedly better with '08 4.7 (haven't seen any numbers yet), but the large gains wouldn't come in unless you introduce a light duty turbo diesel.

'08 Dodge 4.7 - 290 Hp, 320 lb ft

vs. past competitor engines:

'99 Chevy 5.3 - 270 Hp, 315 lb ft
'03 Chevy 5.3 - 285 Hp, 325 lb ft
'98 Ford 5.4 - 235 Hp, 330 lb ft
'03 Ford 5.4 - 260 Hp, 350 lb ft
'05 Toyota 4.7 - 271 Hp, 313 lb ft

I've been thinking of upgrading to the ram with the hemi. I will give the 08 dakota a try and see how it compares to my 02. It may be a viable option if it gets better fuel economy - i wonder how much improvement it will be?

Take a real close look at the Nitro. It's nothing
more than a Jeep Librity. Both built in Toledo.
Biggest engine is the 3.7 V6.

If that's the way the Dakota is heading, I'll
keep my 02.

Besides Dakota being butt ugly, it will have even
more plastic garbage up front like the Nitro.

The Durango? Might as well buy a Mini van! Talk
about a over grown, over priced pile of gas
eaten Hemi!

DC's heading in the wrong direction I think.
Time to kick the Germans out of the company!
Now 13k more American wrokers will be fired from
DC soon.

Almost up to the levels of the 5.9 Magnum in my truck. Almost. Although not too bad for less than 300 cubes. But you would think efficiency would be better for such a small displacement.

If I'm not mistaken, the Hp was 245 or 250 for the 5.9's? Pretty low compared to the competitors list which were all smaller than the 5.9. Thus the reason for the Hemi I guess.

It's really tough to gain significant torque without gaining displacement. Your 5.9 is 25% larger. 5.9 is a great truck engine though, I really only care about torque.

Hopefully the efficiency of the new 4.7 will be higher. The current 4.7 is not much better than the 5.9.

I think the new look is a lot better than the '05 design. Now as long as they will offer a manual with the V8 that'll probably be my next truck. You think toyota might try to throw a V8 in the Tacoma?

I think it all depends on the state your in. In cali they don't allow sticks in v8's because of the power to rate ratio. Is there anyone out there with a manual v8 for the dakotas.
