Subject: 2/4 Lowering kit with 31" A/T tires?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello, I have a 1999 CC V6 with 31" A/T on the stock 15" rims. I am thinking about doing a 2/3 or 2/4 drop.

First question which one would I need to get so the gaps between the fender and tire the same front and back or level?

Would these big tires rub?

Also what is the best way to lower and keep the stock ride or better not stiffer? This is just a daily driver and I do not need any performance handeling just looks and comfort.

Also would like to replace the shocks since the OEMs are most likly gone with 68K miles on them but still want to keep a soft ride.

Thanks to anyone that can answer the above questions.

I am 99% sure you will have issues with 31" tires and a lowering kit. I would assume they are 31 x 10.5? I have 31 x10.5's and they are very close without the drop.

Might wanna call a couple companies who specialize in lowering kits and see what they recommend as the largest tire size you should use. I agree that you'll prolly have some major issues with those tires...I've heard those are bout the biggest tires you can put on a Dakota without a lift kit.

Oh...as far as lowering kits go, I was looking into a Hotchkis TVS kit. But it's also a "handling" kit...and it's $900. Dunno how much of a drop it gives, but I've heard a lot of good things about it though. Might be something to look into?

Yeah, I thought they may rub.

I am looking at getting some used chrome rims with P275/45 R20's. There is a guy selling them off a Durango.

Would these be OK with a 2/4 drop?

Definatly not going to spend $900. Think you can get their coils and leaf springs for around $400. Again just looking for looks and comfort not performance handeling.

Let me know.

Thanks again.

I have a 2/4 drop and run 30" tires (275/65/17) with no problem. A half inch less clearance should not be a problem but it will be tight especially if you carry any kind of load. The 275/45/20's are pushing 32 and you would be pushing your luck.

As for 2/3 or 2/4, our trucks can be a little different, not all have exactly the same stance from the factory. To see what will level your truck, you could put a level across the top of the tires and measure from that to the fender lip to see what the difference is.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I did measure and looks like I will need a 2/3...2/4 would be too much for the rear. Also measured the the 31" tires that I have and it is only 29 1/2" and about 10" wide. Not really sure why when they should be 31" X 10.5"?

For the 20's the web site for the tires say they are 29.8" X 10.8", which is close to what I have now.

Can anyone tell me the max tires size in inches that I will be able to have with a 2/3 drop with out rubbing. I am assuming I really am just worried about the front rubbing.

Also to keep the factory ride it looks like I will need to go with drop spendels and hangers for the rear. I also want to get new shocks and was wondering if I would need to get anything special with just a 2/3 drop or can I just go with the Monroes for stock height?

Thanks again for all of your help.

can't tell you for sure if the 20's will rub or not but, the nice thing about drop spindles is you won't have to worry about changing any other components. so you won't need new shocks.
