Subject: Transfer Case Out???

Message:
I have a 1994 4wd Dakota with a 5 speed manual transmission. I was on a steep hill and shifted into low range to be able to start easier. When I let the clutch out there was a loud bang and the truck jumped into neutral.\,I thought. When I tried to shift into high range it still was like it was in neutral. The shifter on the TC was still moving the lever on the TC but no go. sometimes I would get it to go but it would then appear to jump out of gear and not move. It is now completely stuck in low range and no power to the wheels. Help!, does anyone have info on this. thanks.Sorry if this is posted more than once, Problems....

While I've not had your exact problem, it seems possible your linkage has slipped. With the wheels chocked, slide under the truck and see if the linkage is where it should be, if it is loose, broken or bent. If you are fortunate, that will be all that is wrong.

If you have to go inside the TC, and you are competent to do the work, you can drop the drive shafts and either split the case on the truck like I did once, or remove the whole unit for disassembly. Get a repair manual and keep careful track of all the parts and their orientation.

Hope it is just the linkage.

Oh, just wondered about another thing. Are all your tires the same size? If not, then the axles could lock up in 4WD. I had that experience once, but was able to get it unlocked on the road, then got the tires matched before using 4WD again.
