it does have a lower lubricity than the old 500 ppm yes
but even b2 will be back up to a higher level and not have any issues with the cp3

It's my understanding that the new cummins diesels going into the Ram (5.6 V8) and Durango (4.2 V6) will absolutely require the ultra low sulphur Diesel. No mention of a Dakota. The old diesel will ruin the injectors. By the time they come into production, there will be no more high sulphur diesel anyway.

It's also my understanding that older diesels will see SOME reduction in pollution with the lower sulphur. But the new engines will combine the low sulphur and additional control measures to pollute way less.

The link to the article on these Cummins is:

http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/dodge/0612dp_new_cummins_v6_and_v8/index.html

Lets keep the interest high for this and Daimler might actually give us a Dakota with these engines. If the pollution problem is mitigated, there are no downsides to a diesel Dakota besides some increased sound at idle and increased cost (but lower operating costs).

How about jelled fuel in the cold; or increased wear on brakes ? Those could be possible downsides - but I agree it's a good idea overall.

1) the ULSD is already out, has been required in all 50 states since i believe oct 1st 06
now it will take some time to flush all the systems out and work all the 500 ppm diesel out of the lines and tanks, so the diesel i buy now is mostly ULSD with a hint of the old stuff still lingering in it

and they still do the winter blend in the colder regions to reduce gelling.
and how would it be increased wear on brakes?

SuperBee, Any change in how your 3500 Cummins runs with the low sulphur diesel? Or are you still running the older stuff?

If you run the new stuff, do you run any different oil to account for loss in lubricity?

Due to the extra torque. You'll probably notice this with your Ram diesel after you've owned it a while.

its hard to tell, im not sure if the milage change is on account of the new diesel or because of the way i drive it
i used to get 19 pretty frequently
now i get like 17, but my driving has changed, i now drive 12 miles to work 75-80 the whole way and it hardly even warms up

but i also towed a snowmobile trailer with 3 snowmobiles on it about 100 miles and got about 17.5 and that was driving nice because it was snowing
the 300 miles i towed it before that was like 13 mpg because i was havin too much fun passing all the 1/2 ton gassers pulling their snowmobile trailers >:-)
so how i drive it helps alot with mileage, provided i dont turn the chip up and have fun

i frequently run Power service fuel additive for lubricity reasons when i dont fill up with b2 2% biodiesel blend and now in the winter for the anti-gelling properties, its been around 10-15 degrees here recently and its heading to a high of zero this next week
but i havent driven it in almost 2 weeks, its been sitting in the garage all nice and clean and safe from salt :)
ive been drivin the sh!tbox dakota mostly, after all, it is my winter beater

but i am running the newer stuff and have been for a while, it runs the same
it may even have a bit more power because its not hard to burn the tires now, where as before it would sometimes but not others
i have heard the new stuff has a higher centane rating

The thinner the fuel, the more you consume!! And that the name of the game here. You see; the gov't and EPA agency really want you to believe that this is such a more surperior fuel. Sure, it pollutes less, but what about fuel economy?? Does it improve or degrade fuel economy?? Well! if its a thinner fuel with less oil, then you can expect to go too go back to the BP or Exxon station more often.

im still not following the whole "does it have less oil in it" thing

diesel is a form of oil

They can take more out just too eliminate the sulfer content.

The reason ULSD is required for 2007 vehicles is that sulfer will destroy the emission systems on these vehicles. Sulfer will destroy the catalyst in both the particulate filter and the NOx trap/absorber in the exhaust system. Once the catalyst is destroyed on the particulate filter, the soot will not burn off and it will eventually plug.

So I gather from your post that only '07+ vehicles will have the new emisssions equipment? Sounds like it adds a lot of complexity. But if it keeps truck diesels coming into the market, I'm all for it.

How long is the particulate filter actually supposed to last? I would guess it would not outlive the diesel engine. Expensive or easy to replace?

The new exhaust emissions equipment is very complex and expensive. It will have to meet the federal emissions warranty of 80k? miles.

The filters can either crack or the catalyst goes bad and it pugs. I am guessing at least $500 to the end user to replace one. Peugeot has had a car in production with a particulate filter for about 5 years now. They had/have a real cool video on their website about it and how it works. I believe they had to go in to have the ash cleared out every 50,000 km or so.

Hey, Diesel or not arent we all looking to upgrade the HP and Torque in the Dakota. Cold air Intakes, Chips, Cams, Pistons.....If the noise of a Diesel is annoying, how about the lifter chatter in the Dakota. Sure it can be eliminated but the torque and HP of a Diesel is hard to beat. As far of the ULSD it should be fully distributed in the US by know. I drive a truck at work. Its an older one and runs as good or better than it did on the "old" diesel.
I believe that going 200,000 or more before any major mtr work would be great. Of course good prevenative maint is a must. But what else can you rev at the limiter all day long ang it be ready to go tomorrow, without a second thought. I would'nt run my Dakota at the rev limiter all day long, It wouldnt last, it definately wouldnt be ready to go tomorrow. It would be a pile of junk..

Of course this is just my Opinion....

I remember reading in Motor world magazine that this guy in Springfield MI. who modifies diesels was talking about how much hotter diesel burn just to beat Emissions standards. He claimed that his 03 Excursion EGT is around 1200 degrees!!! And his older powerstroke truck (96) EGT is around 700 while pulling a trailer.
