Subject: 42RE Leaky Rear Seal
IP: Logged

Message:
All: Just checked my trans fluid level in my 02CC and found the level to be off by a quart. Went under the vehicle to inspect the trans and found some oily residue on the drive shaft where it mates to the trans. Has anybody experienced a leaky rear seal? How big of a job is it to replace? Thx for your assistance.

dodge tran seals suck - I'm on my third set. they last around 50k miles. The cheap rubber hards up and tear drops. first change at 60k at trans shop $75, second set at 90k replaced all seals $165.

if you have a 4x4 do all, front, rear and transfer box IMHO

If its 2-wheel drive, real easy. Get the truck up so you can get under it.

At the rear end loosen and remove U-joint bolts.
Loosesn and remove bolts holding the bracket with
center bearing support. (2 piece shafts)
Mark the trans and shaft to line up later.
Pull out the shaft.
Pry the seal out gently.
Replace with new seal. gently tap it in (wood block?)
Reverse the steps.

You check the u-joints replace if bad.
Check center bearing(2 piece shafts)
Rubber could be rotted, need to take to a drive shaft shop.

Thx Don. My truck is a 4X4 but I assume its done the same way. I take it there is no need to change the fluid in a seal replacement?

If you have the miles on it you might as well change it . You are already under it.
Just a thought. Really consider the u-joints, my factory ones did not have grease fittings. New ones are reasonably priced.

Good Luck
