Subject: Dual Exhaust for '93 3.9 Dakota
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '93 Dakota with a 3.9 in it. It is 4wd, automatic and an extended cab. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck finding dual exhaust for a truck like this. I am assuming the simplest route to go is cat-back dual exhaust. The original muffler is about to rust through, so just thinking ahead of stuff to do.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

I have a 92 extended cab 3.9 Auto with duals. Mine was done by a muffler shop in North Dakota. They put a "Y" pipe off the converter and two 22inch glasspack mufflers. It improved my gas mileage by 3mpg. The truck is a little noisy, but I like it like that. It has 229k miles on it and runs like a top.

Thanks Scott, thats something to consider. Did you just have them make the "Y" really narrow so it would fit between the frame and the drive shaft? How far back did the glasspacks go? Did you just dump them out before the rear end or what? So, were the glasspacks side by side and close to each other? No problems with backpressure or anything either? What kind of loud is the sound? Is it low sounding or an annoying sound?

Thanks

The "Y" is narrow. I would have to go crawl under it and see how far back they go, and I can't right now, cuz I think they would frown on that if I crawled under my tuck in the office parking lot on their time!! They do tuck under nicely tho. I had full exhaust run, they exit out the sides behind the rear wheels similar to what a stock exhaust would, but with a slight angle and a chrome tip. I don't have any probs with backpressure and my check engine light does NOT come on like some do if the exhaust pressure is messed up. Mine is a low rumble, not like a flowmaster, but not like those splatty sounding mufflers the punks put on their hondas either. That being said, mine is about 6 years old, and if you have ever messed with glasspacks, you know they burn out over time. It was not this loud when new. I have been very pleased with them. Someone bent my back bumper and screwed up one of my chrome tips, so when I find a bumper and have the tip replaced, I may have mine run straight out the back, as I saw a Dakota local to me set up like this and I liked the way it looked. Hope this helps a little.

Brandon, I forgot to mention, the mufflers are pretty close together, probably no more than an inch between them, but they don't rattle or cause any problems. Also, I have the tailpipes run out one on each side, not both on the same. There is plenty of room to do it and still keep your spare tire underneath.

Scott, you have been a great help. I think I may try this set up. I know a shop in my town that would probably do this for me as they have already set up my '82 Chrysler Cordoba with dual exhaust too.

Thank you.
