Subject: Gas Mileage

Ok so i got a question on my 01 dakota 4x4 club cab with a standard trans. I get 270 miles out of a tank and my mother which owns an 01 dakota 2x4 crew cab with auto trans is still usually sitting right under 1/2 tank. what could I look at as far as the lack of gas mileage? i do reagular maintence on my truck. the plugs were just changed out about 5000 miles ago or less.

Could be differences in:
Engine
Drive train (4x4 vs 4x2) 4x4 works harder just moving down the road
Differential gear ratio
Quality of gas
Driving style

clint282cc - it certainly does; parasitic frictional loss as the hubs don't disconnect.

jake - you should figure in miles per gallon for meaningfull results, miles per tank is way too subjective. Do you even have the same size tanks ? Gauges can read differently, etc.

everything about the trucks are the same Engine, size of gas tank but does my truch being a 4x4 really be that much harder on gas. I baby the truck usually shifting around 2100 to 2500 rpm. but as far as gas mileage I get about 12mpg no matter if im on the highway or stop and go.

I have 2003 4x4 Quad 4.7 Jake I get 13 in the city but on a few trips to Illinois I was getting almost 18.I have a 22 gallon tank get about 270 give or take a few in the city got about 374 miles to the tank on freeway for 7 hrs.5 more miles to the gallon on the freeway.With a 4x4.Hope this helps.(Thats after my Mods coulda been worse stock I guess)

Not only is there frictional loss because of the hubs not unlocking, you have to turn your rear wheels through another vat of fluid (the transfer case), and you've also got the added weight of everything that is 4x4...diff, transfer case...

Check your gear ratios as previously stated.
Are your tires the proper sizes, different sized tires can make your odometer read higher/lower than you actually have traveled.

Newer automatics are getting better fuel economy than stick shifts, usually.

My 04 Dak gets 20 mpg hiway on a regular basis in good weather, has got 21.5 mpg occaisionally.

It is a QC, 4x4, 4.7, 3.55 gears, auto5spd, 245 tires @ 38 psi, Leer cap, use cruise most of the time. Only mod is K&N drop-in air filter.

Has original copper Champion plugs at 25,000 miles, that will be replaced this spring with same.

12 mpg means you are either a leadfoot, towing a house, or your truck is badly in need of a repair or a tuneup.

It's prob just how your mom drives compared to you plus the 4X4. My dad and I shared the same truck while I was in college and broke, a '96 Chevy 4.3 w/a 5-speed. I'd get prob 20mpg at best. He would always get 25 even 27mpg in the thing. Drove me crazy he'd ease into every gear and shift at like 2200. I'd try his style but just couldn't keep it up. eventualy I'd go back to slapping the gears without even realizing it.

Agreed on the driving style. I do a lot of highway driving and have experimented on driving styles. I've driven her hard, up and down with the pedal, and speeding, and it really eats gas. Versus driving steady at like 65MPh...I saved about a 1/4 tank of fuel for the same trip! I never realized the difference driving style made until I got a V8.

From what you said, your mom's gauge is wrong. The math just doesn't work.

You use up nearly a whole tank and get 12mpg.

She uses a little less than 1/2 a tank in the same 270 miles. That means her mileage is better than 20mpg. Really? A stock Dodge Dakota QC that consistantly gets better than 20mpg? I'm having a hard time with that one. You do take a small hit with 4x4, but not that much.

Fill both tanks. Drive the same distance. Then fill both tanks again. Now you know what your fuel mileage really is.

If your mom really is getting 20+mpg, she needs to contact Dodge so they can figure out what they did right on that truck.

i get about the same as josh gets minus the highway miles. i just got done driving from NC to MO and back and at 75 miles an hour the entire way the best i got was 280 when the gas light came on

2002 4x2 4.7 5-speed, hard tonneau cover....I get around 300 Miles to the low fuel light comes on. I've gotten up to 350 in the summer with conservative driving (70 mph or less).

I was shocked Jake when I looked at the trip at empty I was way beyond the light lol.I was pushing it as far as I could before I thought I was really taking a chance. I found out that there is still a good bit of fuel in the tank after the light tells you to feed the thing I think I figured something like 5 or 6 gallons left after light comes on.My truck is really breathing good after the Intake the Headers Ys and catback.I still think I would a seen over 300 on the road trips before the mods.Thats 70mph on cruise down there no cruise coming back up.Yall might think I am crazy but north and south I believe affects the mileage. Up hill most the way back I figured it would work the truck harder than I would

PLEASE people..........do the math!

It means absolutely nothing how many miles you get to a tank. .boB has it right: fill the truck; drive a long distance; refill the truck;
divide miles travelled by gallons used.

Now you have a useful, scientific number to work with in miles per gallon. Now for every similar trip you can measure the distance, divide it by your mpg and know how many gallons you need.

Plus, the rest of us who are reading your posts will understand what you speak of.

Isnt that what I did I Filled up before I left 374 on dead E got gas.22 goes into 374 17 times would come out to 17 mpg on a 22 gallon tank!Last I did the math 760 miles was full trip one way. Pulled in the driveway had a quarter tank left on second fill up.I didnt run out on first fill up so im sure there were a couple or few more gallons in there if so im probably getting 18 miles to the 22 gallon is 396 last time I did the math were just talking and estimating dude chill we all are not engineers like yourself apparently.Did you understand that?

yepp thats right
i'm getting 60 miles per gallon
i changed the oil to scamsoil
put a nice new amway oil filter
ate a box of amway cereal
(that i bought from myself) through my very own amway buisness!
and washed it down with 1/2 quart of scamsoil

my truck will now live to see half million miles
I'll live to 150 & i'll still have a full head of hair!!!!!

choochoo is right, for a meaningful discussion you need to do the math and figure in miles per gallon - otherwise you're just guessing. You don't divide by the capacity of your tank, but rather by gallons required to fill back up. Shouldn't need to be an engineer to figure that out. Looks like jake doesn't know the axle ratios for the 2 vehicles he is trying to compare as similar; I wonder if they even have the same engines.
