What's this death flash I've been hearing of on 318's computers?

That term refers to any dealer PCM reflash that retards the timing for any of our engines, not just 318. Called that because it kills performance.

Dumb question, but why do they do that??? Why not reflash it to factory specs???

I'm pretty sure I have that. Not much low-end grunt.

I think its primarily for pinging complaints; and factory specs would usually be what it already has.

Bobert - is there a sticker on your PCM for a reflash ? Anything not stock on your truck, like larger tires ?

Our 00 SLT has been "flashed" and I have a superchips tuner on the 02. The 00 seems to get a little worse mpg then the 02. Can I assume that the "death flash" would also create less gas mileage?

what the flash has done (in the past anyway)
was retard the timing (& yes to rid the ping issue)
& with that comes a loss of performance & lower MPG's (no clue if their doing it diff. now)

My 2000 r/t has a sticker under the hood that says it was flashed.
Can I take my truck to the dealer and have them reflash it to the original programming?

dan - I don't believe they will. There were many flashes other than the death flash, done for different reasons - for example, mine was flashed because it didn't always catch reverse, sometimes you'd have to move the shifter to get it to go in. Not even knowing what flash you have, why would you want it undone ?
