If your planning on doing a high compression engine than I hope you got a nice budget planned out. It would be best to run forged H beam rods and Forged pistons. That right there will run you about 800-1000 dollars. Now for the heads......there another 1500 or so.

i dont understand what you guys dont get. we did the leak test and NO air came out either exhast or intake valve. it blew by the piston. it was coming outof every hole oil would. as goes high compression, i was only thinkin 10.5/1. i still want to use pump gas.

Then you might want to stick to something more like 9.5/1.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

aluminum heads may get you a little closer to 10.5:1. very pricey though.

Oh ok so I see you already have SEEN the damage.

I'd be curious to what happened. That is crazy that the piston got cracked all the way through but you never know. A valve binding at the correct point could crack a piston dome.

Do you have a digital camera? Take us some pictures. Take us some pictures when you pull the head for show and tell :P

LOL.....unless you THROW a rod...the piston is only going to TDC no matter what.....sounds to me you overtightened a rocker or something in that manner to make one of the valves stay open. 100% sure that's your prob. You need to have experience in engines to be able to work on them w/o having to replace stuff you didnt need because you messed it up.

you would not want to go to a very high compression ratio with NOS because you would have to retard your ignition too much and it may not pay off. NOS is safe for most applications but I have seen cases where people have melted lots of internals because of it.

the motor is not taken apart yet but i will take some pics when i can. hey chris G. read the posts before you put one up. i put 1.7 rockers on with a r/t cam. my mistake was i put the pushrod in wrong and it over extended the valve. thats our guess.

but we know 100% that the piston is f-ed up cause we stuck one of those scopes in there and seen the damage. there was multiple gouges in the piston.

if i cant go to 10/1 then what eles can i do to squeeze out some hp? im ganna port and polish the heads and all the polt ons are done. what eles is there?

have you decided how you're going to use the truck? there are a lot of ways to make more power(i.e., boost, N2O, hotter cam bigger valves, different intake and exhaust manifolds, etc..) but if you get too radical you can have an engine that is a pain to drive on the street.

you can spend thousands and if the complete drivetrain is not set up right, you've wasted your money and time.

But now he could be right about OL James..

Say, what type of cam are you looking for? You could use a comp cam or just rebuilt you engine up to your specs.. The 318 is a very strong block but it will not put out the kind of toruqe a 360 Magnum would. Also I would recomend adding tubular exaust headers. It would allow the motor to breathe freely and thereby produce more power .

i have headers, intake, r/t cam, and throttle body. ive decided to go with a mopar performance cam. with .484 of lift and 296 duration. im ganna bore it over .030. keepin the compression the same and ganna through some stiff springs on it. im also ganna port and polish the heads. also what to get the timing gears with the gear drive, just for the hell of it since the chain is way streached.

i still dont know were im ganan get lifters and vlaves from. pistons i have somewhat of an idea but not too sure. the cam i found in jegs so i know were toget it.

what kind of numbers do you guys think ill be pushin? im hopin over 300 to the wheels

You dont wanna polish the intake side on a N/A engine. Im not sure if anyone makes a gear drive for the magnums....but a new double roller will be just fine. your gonna want a flash if your running that much duration...the stock computer wont like that..And you really want to spin the engine out to take full advantage of the cam.

Say, your pushing 300HP at the wheels with a 318 Magnum?? Or is this an older LA carb Motor?

well i have a mopar pcm. and after checkin on this program on the computer it says that the 455 lift cam has more hp compared to the 484. and why dont i want to polish the heads? i was guessing before the rebuild about 250-260 at the wheels. so im hopin a bit more than 300 after.

that program said stock it had like 275 to the crank. and after the build like 370 and with all my other stuff done. so im hopin around 330-340.
