Well i have just purchased my truck and the person who had it probably never changed the oil so when i got it i put in synthetic 10w30. Well im approaching 2K on the oil change and i noticed a bit of oil around the valve covers and im about a quart and a half low. My question is should i stick with synthetic or go to good quality dino. also if i stick with syn. will the burning and leaking eventually stop.
thanks a bunch.

I think synthetic is less prone to sludging and is starting to dissolve the sludge that motor's accumulated. Since you've already started, I'd stick with it, hopefully you'll get the internals cleaned up a bit. If you stop now a big clot of sludge could dislodge and go to where it could cause some harm (and that might happen anyway). The valve covers could now be leaking because of the synthetic disolving the crap in your motor that you didn't really want sealing them anyway, but it'll never cure the leak - you'll have to replace the gaskets for that. You might clean a lot of sludge from that area while you're in there. Synthetic won't cure an engine that's badly worn from poor care either, so the burning will continue. It's a bit late now, but you can often tell how a motor was maintained by pulling the dipstick before purchase - if it's got a brown stain baked onto it, good sign of poor maintenance.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

depending on which engine you have the oil consumption could be from a bad plenum gasket.
3.9L, 5.2L or 5.9L not a 3.7L or 4.7L

bad plenum gskt is an easy fix.

I don't think I would get over excited about the syn oil. I was using Mobil 1 syn with no problem and used no oil at all . I changed to Mobol 1 EP, the newest mobil and I used 1/2 quart in a 240 rt trip. Three thips were all the same. Just as fast as it started it stopped and used none sense. Go figure. You may have stuck rings or you may just be leaking it all. If it's going to streighten itself out, The syn is your best bet. It may take some time depending on how bad it is. Watch your oil guage. If it drops any or starts moving around change the filter. If that doesn't fix the oil presure, It's time to drop the pan. AUTORX is a great product for cleaning the inside of engines. It works slowly, safely and does a great job. Far as I know you need to send for it off the net.If your engine really is very dirty, you may need to do it twice. Seafoam is pretty good and available at most parts houses and marine stores. Seafoam scares me as it works to fast. I have no problem with seafoam if it os used in the fuel tank and poored down the intake to clean out carbin. If your plenum gasket is leaking causing the oil use, you should have spark knock.

So many problems .... So little time

Well thanks for the input. Looks like i may stick with the syn. The truck was poorly maintained it seems. The dipstick is brown baked. I hope that the burning or leaking stops and the reason i heard to use syn. is because it is a detergent. Which i know i need. I used seafoam in the throttle body and gas tank and seemed to restore some power. I was gonna try it in the oil before my next change. I just hope since i take care of my truck way better than the guy before me it will take care of me. I got a great deal couldnt pass up a 99 3.9 2wd with 106 on it for 2800. Only problem is the paint is pretty bad and it has a nice sized dent in it. they are talking like 3K for paint. Oh well win some lose some but thanks a lot.
