You are in luck. I just pulled one from my '97 4x4. It shifted perfectly. I upgraded to the 46RE because I have a supercharger. You will still need a torque converter because the one I removed is not worth re-installing. I haven't even had a chance to clean it up.

The 42, 44, and 46 will all bolt behind any 3.9, 5.2, or 5.9. So yes, a 46RE will work just fine behind your engine. It does have a different first and second gear, but thats besides the point.

My transmission has 131k on it. I have never had any problems with it. It still shifted perfectly when I pulled it out.

I paid $700 for my 46RE core, and was looking to get around $500 for mine. But, I haven't spend any time cleaning it, so if you don't mind a little oil residue, I would probably take $400+shipping.

All I would have to do to ship it is drain the oil, and put it on a pallet. My zip code is 14534 if you want to figure out the shiping.

When I bought my transmission, it was shipped from CA to NY for $200.

Lucas! stay with the 44RE transmission. The 46RE or RH was just awfull and had to many design flaws. Also the 44RE as a more suiteable first great than the 46.

Joe,

What kind of design flaws are you talking about on the 46? I am curious because the place I bought mine from recomended it over building up the 44.

You are right about the 1st gear, and second. I was worried at first, changing from the 2.74 to the 2.45 first gear as it is about a 10% gear change. But, my personal every day driving habits had me in 3rd gear by 30 mph and OD by 40. So, while you do loose a litte acceleration potential, it only affects a small portion of my driving.

only way i'd buy it from you is if you sold it for $200 plus shipping. at the most $250. it has a lot of miles, mine died at 106,000. your in NY and i'm sarasota,fl, shipping would kill me. does it come with a working torque converter? let me know.

the 44 and 46 are the SAME design, the 46 is just bigger. The earliest versions were the 3-speed torqueflites, 904 and 727, which eventually became the 4-speeds 44RE and 46RE respectively. Also, the 44 and 46 have the SAME overdrive section. The differences in size are in the "front three" section.

Having never done that particular swap or measurement, I cannot say 100%, but since the non-4WD overdrives are the same length and size, I would think it's an even swap.

Lucas,

I pulled my 44RE and bolted up the 46RE. It was a direct replacement. The only difference is the shift cable bracket and the dip stick tube.

My torque converter was not good. That was the reason I pulled the transmission in the first place.

As for the price, I don't think I can move much on the 400, certainly not to 200. I don't blame you about the shipping. That is a dissadvantage because I should get $400 for it, and you are willing to pay $400 total.

I am sorry that this isn't going to work out.

Seems to me that you should be able to find a junk yard close to your place.

I agree on keeping the 44RE. You can build it plenty tough and but make sure you buy a Sonnax Sure Cure kit. Also, you can build up the overdrive buy changing the planet to a 5 gear and also easily add up to 6 direct clutches for better lockup. Also would want to replace ALL the bushings and use the updated thrust bearing and plate in the overdrive for better lube. As for design flaws, both the small and large trannies suffer the same main 2 defects. Bad lubrication on the thrust bearing in the overdrive and converter overheating. Thge updated bearing and plate with fix that problem and the Sonnax kit will fit the no lube in park issue the converter without drilling the valve body. Buy as many of the Sonnax upgrades as you can afford and you will be doing great and will give you better shifting. Also, if you are doing a lot of towing or racing upgrade to Red Eagle clutches and Kolene steels and make sure you use Kevlar bands.
