Subject: Draining coolant..
IP: Logged

Message:
im getting ready to pull of my cyclinder heads but first of course i need to drain all the coolant out.

i did the radiator and the plug on the driver side of the block but the book says there is one on each side. Problem is the only thing i can determine that would be the other plug is almost completely covered by the engine mount.

How necessary is it to open both plugs? Can i get by with just doing the first? i appreciate any and all responses...

It would be so much easier to answer this engine-specific question if you told us which engine youre talkin about.

Your ok with pulling the one plug .... that one alone should almost drain the block ... even if a little water ends up inside the cylinders when you pull the heads its no problem ... just use a rag and soak it up ...

I could be wrong on this; I havn't taken a Dodge motor apart in a long time. But on my SBF, you need to drain both sides of the block. The only coolant connection between right and left is in the intake manifold and the water pump.

If you just drain half the block, the water level on the other side will be about the same level as the water pump outlet. When you remove the head, some of the coolant will end up in the cylinder, and then the crank case.

gentlemen, stop sweatin about how or where to drain the coolant just because it may puddle in the cylinders after removing the heads. IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT. NO DAMAGE WILL TAKE PLACE! there will be a little coolant left behind no matter what. just get some paper towels and remove it. just drain the system via the radiator petcock, and or remove the lower radiator hose, and pull the freakin heads. as said before, change the oil when you're done, open up a cold can of beer, and pat yourself on the back for doing it yourself.
