Has anyone noticed that the NV3500 seems to make a lot of noise? My '01 whines to the point where I am beginning to think it has a spun bearing. Is this normal for these trucks? I have never owned a manual transmission that was this loud.

My original NV3500 had a very loud whine to it when driving. I just knew there was something wrong with it from day 1. It promptly took it to the dealer to get my concerns logged into their computer as a complaint. It also had a sound at idle and in nuetral that sounded like marbles rolling around inside it. They assured me that it was "normal". Yeah, OK.... if you say so! After a short while the trans started having a vibration to it whenever it was under a load (pulling a trailer for instance). The vibration got worse as the miles went on. The vibration was so bad that the shifter tower kept coming loose from the trans. Since I have the 3.92 gears with mine I would generally not use 1st gear for normal driving. I would take off in 2nd. After a while it started to pop out of 2nd gear if I took off in 2nd. If I took off in 1st, it would act normal. Just basically idling thru the neighborhood in 2nd it would also sometimes pop out of gear. After repeated visits to my friendly dealer, they replaced the transmission completely. This was after 25,000 miles of listening to it whine and rattle.

Wow! What a huge difference. No more whining in the gears. No more rattling sound at idle. No more vibration under load. It even shifts nice and smoothly where the other one was kind of clunky. This transmission is absolutely quiet.... No whine or rattle. The problem is fixed!

If I were you, I would take it to my dealer and complain. They definately will tell you that it's just fine. Unless something is actually broken, they have a very difficult time justifying it under warranty. I would make sure that the complaint is checked out and that it gets entered into their database about your truck. That way later on..... you will have it documented that you knew something was wrong with it all along. How many miles do you have on the truck so far?

Duner,

I have almost 11k on it now. It's going in for some other warranty type stuff, and I'll make sure that I point it out to them. I haven't noticed any other problems with the tranny just yet, aside from the noise...
