Subject: Manual Tranny - when to change fluid?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 5-speed manual with the 4.7 V8. Do you need to change the manual transmission fluid often and if so when? I have about 140,000 KM's on the original fluid.
Also, how do you change it? Is it easier then doing an auto tranny fluid change?
Thanks!

Dodge recomends it somewhere around 30,000 miles (for my '03 anyway), and use synthetic

Your manual transmission has a fill plug and a drain plug. Look around a bit, you'll figure it out. I think they're 10mm socket head, meaning you need a 10mm Allen-type wrench to remove them.
Here's a tip I learned the hard way. Loosen the drain plug first. That way you know you'll be able to replace the fluid after you drain it. If you drain the fluid first, then can't get the fill plug out because it's too tight or the socket flats are rounded, well, you can figure that one out, too.

Cool...thanks guys. So this is a really simple procedure? Drain and fill? No filters, no gaskets??? How many quarts does it take?

Yeah. That's what I meant. Loosen the FILL plug first.
The NV3500 4x2 takes 4.8 pints and the 4x4 takes 4.2 pints.
Fluid specified is "Mopart Manual Transmission Lubricant".

Awesome site! Thanks. I don't have a "pump" type device to put the new oil in though.

Buy one at your favorite auto parts retailer. The one I bought was something like 5 or 6 bucks. We're not talking about a lot of money for a cheapo pump you need for the job.

What's your left foot doing?

Hey Anthony....how did you know what viscosity of fluid to put in? Your site says you used Deisel engin oil - is that right? I went to the dodge dealer today, and all they had was the fluid specific to the NV3500. The bottle doesn't say if it's synthetic or not, nor does it say the viscosity, ie. 5W30. However, it's $15 a quart. I think I might just stick with the OEM oil. But was curious if you're using the right stuff in your tranny or not.

Pugsy,

I got the information straight from New Venture themselves!!! The oil is 5w-30 with low sulphur content. The reason why most of us 5 speed guys run Amsoil diesel oil, it's because the sulphur is low and it will not cause damage to the synchros. I've been running it now for 4.5yrs

I highly recommend trying Amsoil "NEW" Sychromesh 5w-30 tranny oil, it's suppose to be good. Look it up on google.

Don't waste your money buying the dealership's high priced oil!!! If they put the labels on the bottles of the grade of oil and if it is or not synthetic. They wouldn't be asking $15 a quart!! Because they know you would be able to get the same thing for 1/4 of the price.
