Subject: Code P0456?
IP: Logged

Message:
The "check engine" light has been
on for about a week now; since the
first really foggy morning of the fall.
I did the on/off/on/off/on trick and the
odometer displayed P0456. Anybody know
what this code means?
'03, SLT+, QC, 4.7, stick

After the code, it displayed Pdone.
I know what that means because I have
a three year old!

It means there is a minor leak in the system that keeps the fuel vapors from escaping. It could be a loose gas cap, a bad gas cap, or a leaky hose. If you can't find the leak, a mechanic will fill the system with some sort of smoke and look for the leak.

Gas caps a cheap, buy a new one, and see if that fixes the problem. That's what I did, but it didn't fix it for me.

Also remember to disconnect the battery to reset the code. If it's not fixed it will take a week or so for the light to come back on

"leaky" hit it right. The upper-most hose to the canister was split starting at the end, on the upper side. I had to feel it to find it. With no clamp, the hose takes all the stress. It also looks like they put some lube in the hose to push it on. The wrong lube will split hoses as well. I replaced it with an "L" shaped reinforced coolant hose - cut both ends to fit. Cost me $10.50 at Schucks. I lightly clamped both ends to help prevent splitting as well. Hopefully it won't stress the canister and cause it to crack! After a few days of restarts the "check engine" light is gone.
