Subject: Gear swaping ?

Message:
I have tried to talk to gearing co. but simply dont have the time to stay on hold. I have a 1990 Dak, 3.9L V6. % in.s of lift and running 31x10.50x15. I also have a couple hundred extra pounds of extra weight due to grill gurad, roll bar, my sound system, etc. I want to do a gear swap but simply dont know what gears to go with. The stock 3.21's aren't cutting it. I have been told to go with 3.92s or 4.10s. I do a small bit of mudden but mostly drive on to road to work and class. Please give me any feed back you can. I am just looking to gain back some of the power I lost with the installation of larger tires. Thanks
Joe E.

Your truck is burning a lot of fuel because the engine is having to work hard with the 3.21 gears and large tires. I'll stand by my gear advice if you are stayng with the 31's. If it wasn't for the fact your truck would look bad lifted up with small tires I would think of going with a stock size tire. If you want to keep things as is then something in the 3.91 to 4.11 range(depending on what rear you have) would be sweet albeit a little expensive. I think this would be the best and most sensible power improvement for you. Your mileage might actually improve a bit since you won't have to beat it as hard.

Thanks KJ, yeah I am going to stay with the 31's. I like them too much to rid myself of them. I will take your advice and go with something in the 3.91 - 4.11 range. That is when I can get the money. Thank you for the help.

Glad to be of any help to you. Some people on this board speak highly of Randy's Ring and Pinion. Richmond Gear seems to be of decent quality and Mopar might have what you need. I would look for who can give you the best deal for front and rear sets.

This is the kicker though KJ, my 90'Dak is only a 2wd. So I will noly have to buy 1 set of gears. I wish it was a 4x4 but its not. Thanks though. Will your advice change now knowing that it is a 2wd or do you still go with 3.92's?

Actually in this situation it works to your benefit because you will only have half the expense. Sorry for assuming you had a 4x4. My advice is still the same regarding the ratio. I think the 3.91 or 3.92 would work well for you in my opinion. Just remember it will affect the speedo so you will have to correct that. Just curious is it an automatic or manual and how many speeds?

KJ, Its an automatic and 4 speed plus overdrive. Its a good little truck but it definitly needs some work. Like a Mopar 360. But that will come in time! Thanks for the help.

Hope it works out well for you. Too bad you don't have the 9.25 rear because you could probably find a wrecked V-8 Dakota in the scrap yard and have a chance of finding a 3.92 geared rear end ready to go.
