at the begining of summer, my heater core went out on the way to work. since i didnt need heat at the time, i just bypassed it. well now it is getting cold at night and i dont have heat. the core is only $65 and i thought that i could replace it myself but after reading the haynes manual on it, it says that i have to discharge the ac system and remove part of it just to get to the heater core. i was just wandering if anyone has replaced their heater core themselves and how much of a pain in the a$$ it was.

I replaced the evap core in my old 05. It was not a hard job to do just tedious. Yes, you need to evac the A/C. The heater core and evaporator care are located in the same housing under the dash.

it's doable, will take a few hours the first time you do it. Shops wanted to charge me 600+ to do it, I did it myself for cost of evaporator core ($90) + a couple gallons of antifreeze ($17), a couple cans of r134 ($15 - I already had guage) a few o-rings (you'll want to replace all of them - $5 for monster pack that I'll never use all of), shop to evac my system ($24 - I got a deal on that) and $10 for the tools (plastic kind worked best for me vs metal scissor kind) to disconnect that A/C hose. I think that's it...

My cost was $161.

If you decide to do it you may want to pre-emptively replace both heater core and a/c evapoator core at the same time.

Also, if you want/need to, now's a good time to replace your lower and upper hoses.
