For those of you living in snowy climates and own a newer 3.9 dakota, beware of putting wieght in the back of your truck for added traction unless you want piss-poor gas milage!!! I put only 200 pounds in the back and it dropped from 16.5-17.0 mpg to 13-14 mpg.....one time i even got 12.5!!! I expect perhaps a little loss of performance from the added wieght but a 3-4 mpg drop from a measly 200 pounds is horrible.....Ask these engines to do any work at all and they guzzle gas like any big V-8....When is that new V-6 coming out, cause dodge desperatly needs it....

Well that does indeed suck. At least I have an excuse for crap miliage.

Do you have 4wd? By chance when you added the weight, did you also need to 4 wheel it. Because thats what I', blaming for my less then good miliage is the snow. And needing to pop her into 4 wheel drive.

Also have you been unexpectidly idling a lot? Or running the engine to warm up the car.

Because if it is cold, and you need bags, I'm just wondering if by chance you are warming up your car and blasting the heater. Since the engine is small, and cannot run the fans without using more power. Perhaps...

I agree with Bob. I get bad mileage but I am still averaging over 14 MPG in town, EPA rating is 13 in town.

If it bothers you that much, do something.

I have added weight for the past two winters, and yes, it does decrease gas mileage a bit. But this past winter i put 740 lbs of sandbags in the back. (I hate slowing down for some stupid snow). My gas mileage down the highway was the same as without the bags, and the ride was a little nicer with the shocks already compressed a bit. As for around town, the mileage drop was noticable, but not that much considering it is mostly stop and go. But paying a little more for gas is worth not paying alot more for repairs.
The V-6 does quite a good job getting around. And with a big boat, A/C running on a hot day and the thing keeps pulling like a champ.

Zed your using way to much wait 50lbs is plenty. I have 2wd without a no slip. I live in Ontario Canada and have gone through some nasty weather with little to no problems. Also you need to get good tires I use AWTs there noisy, don't grip the pavement the best and a little harder on gas but if you drive through snow you need a good tire.
oh ya i'm getting 15-16 mpg in the city and 20-22mpg on the highway. The best improvement for gas milage is getting a tunnel cover.

My '97 Supercharged V6 gets (on the average) about 16-17mpg. If you're getting that bad of mileage, either take it back tot he dealer, complain about it, or take it back enough times to get it under the Lwmon Law act.

I just bought a 97 3.9 that is getting 13.0 mpg. Why? I have 2wd and no weight in the back (except the bedliner!) Also, acceleration sucks above 30 mph. HELP! What can I do to help this thing. I do not mind the poor mpg if the thing would at least get out of it's own way on the road.

0-60 in 16 seconds sucks!
