I'm not sure of the specifics but a few people here have dropped in nissan (i think) diesel engines into dakotas.

If you search you can find the details. One guy even had a few pictures on a website of the conversion as i recall.

Nissan and Diesel. Thoise are two words that do NOT go together :p

I know Isuzu makes lots of 4 banger Deisels. And I think there is a good inline 4 Cummins that people have done. Something about getting them from Frito Lay trucks?

Here is the website I was referring to:

http://www.canev.com/Dakota.html

the thread:
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/raise/2920.html

from the website:

The truck is a 1999 Dodge Dakota club cab 4X4 with a V6 gas engine and automatic transmission.

The engine is a 2000 Isuzu 4HF1 normally aspirated 4L out of a NKR 3 ton truck. The NKR was never imported into North America except for a few "demonstration" vehicles, it is a smaller version of the popular Isuzu NPR which uses basically the same engine only with a turbo (which may find its way onto my engine down the road).

I've seen Gen I & Gen II Dakotas with 318, 340 and 360 blocks in them. Also a guy at a local track running a GM 350 in what used to be a 90 4x4 (now 2wd). And a few Dakotas running KRC 408 strokers which are just based on the 360 block.

I've also seen a few diesel Dakotas while traveling. The Dakota was available for a couple of years (99-01 I believe) with a 4-cyl Detroit Diesel. Those trucks were build in Dodge's short lived Campo Largo plant in Brazil and were only available in a few South American countries. Unfortunately, that plant was one of the first casualties of Daimler's post merger cost cutting.

hey robert, it's funny you mentioned the 440. Some friends and I were talking this past weekend about projects we'd like to do. I tossed out that I'd like to buy another dak and drop in a 440. That would be awesome.

I saw a Dodge Dakota once that ran on an engine that required liquid plutonium to operate, it was the only thing that could generate the 1.21 jigawatts of electricity it needed (except for a bolt of lightning) to operate the flux capacitor, which is what makes time travel possible.

we had a 97 ram 4X2 with the 3.9, and it did fine as a farm truck. i know that dakota doesnt weigh in as much as a fullsize ram. so i dont know why people complain about the 3.9 saying it doesnt have enough power. yea its no drag truck but it gets the job done fine every time.
