Subject: Brake Rub/ Vibration

OK, I own a 99 Dodge Dakota, it looks like all the work I am doing to it I am doing myself, It is just a 2WD auto tranny w/of course ABS. I replace my brakes last week and I didnt turn the rotors, they appeared to be without grooves and not warped. When I drove it a rub/vibration noise started after the brakes got warm.

I had taken off the affected side and readjusted *as well as you can* the brake calipers, they are of the floating kind. Still had the rub. Then I checked the calipers to make sure they still worked properly, and they did. Then I lubricated the back of the pads and the pins on the caliper. That stopped the rub on one side. Took the caliper off the other side to do the same, now I have the rub on the other side, after lubricating it. I took that side off again to readjust it but still the rub occurs.

What could cause this problem?

If your brakes worked fine before, they will work fine now. As soon as the new pads seat.
Ride the brakes hard (as in, gas on the floor, hard)for about 1/2 mile. That will help.
Make sure there is lots of grease on the slides the caliper rides on. With all that heat, plan on re-greasing every 30 to 40,000 miles to be sure there is no binding.
You should be fine.

Mine did that when I forgot to make sure the springs on the outer sides of the outer pads were properly placed.

Is the vibration constant, or only when braking, or only when turning?

It only occurs when I drive at speeds higher than 40 for a bit of time *usually being about 10 min*. Just occurs when driving forward, when I brake the noise goes away and the noise is intermittant.

Also with the "floating" caliper there are no visible slides the calipers ride on, just pins and pads to grease.

I thought I might help but I don't know what's going on with your brakes. It's worth noting that those pins are VERY easy to cross-thread when putting them back in. Some shops will give you a brake check-up for around $15. That might be an option for you, to have someone double-check your work.

I had the same problem with a bad vibration after
replacing my front brake pads, drove me crazy, I
was all over the internet no solution worked. Then
I took one last look before going to a mechanic
(Yes I am a do it yourselfer) The outer spring on
the outer pad is bent on the end in such a manor
that it looks like it should rest on the steering
knuckle the same as the brake pads, however it does
not it goes under the mounting area, I had to
compare my job with internet photos to be sure,
guess I did not pay enough attention to how they
came apart. Vibration on my Dakota is cure
