Subject: Burnout question

Ok, this might sound really stupid, but i was just wondering. I've
seen videos of dakotas burning out and stuff. How do they get
them to burnout for so long? is it the power and just goes for a
long time? or is it just because they're powerbreaking or
something? and how do you do that?

It seems to me that they would have a seperate brake control for the front ( like dune buggies use for steering ) so they can lock the front brakes and then just punching it to spin them meats.

its a thing called powerbraking all you do is push on the gas the same time as the break and since your front brakes are stronger than your back ones your back tires break loose and then u just go until u run out of tread

Make sure you only push the brakes hard enough to lock your fronts and keep you from moving forward...if you put too much pressure on the brakes you either won't be able to break your tires free (depending on tire size, gearing, engine, etc) or you'll roast your rear brakes.

brake torque so its called round here..ive done it a few times when i had my crappy tires. apply brakes a lil more than you need to keep you from rolling in gear, apply accelerator and let up off the brakes if you have to. once the back tire(s) brake free, apply a lil more brake if you are movin. I did this in a parking lot for about 30 seconds piss this dude off at a pool hall. smoked my one tire pretty good

you guys are all lame!! you have to through it into first and floor the gas untill it starts spinnin "dont forget aobut the brake" and once it starts spinnin good drop the gas down to about 3500 to 4000. it will spin as long as you want. if you dont put it into first it will shift into second as soon as you try to drop the gas. and thats were most people grab traction. ive done a burn out for over a 1/4 and all i didnt was what i said to do^^. now if oyu got about 450 hp you can let that thing shift all it wants but the power is stil there at the lower rpms so it will keep spinnin.... o by the way if you have a v6 dak..... forget about it

Wrong...my little V6 was cheered on by a couple cocky drunks in a V8 F-150 (yeah, yeah...Ford...I know...) one night. My friend powerbraked his Camaro and they were ragging on him saying he was doing sissy burnouts...so I went and smoked up the entire Steak n Shake parking lot in my V6 Dakota. I didn't hear em but my friends who were still there after I left said they were cheering me on the whole time.

One wheel peel is definitely easier to maintain a burnout than spinning both that is for sure. Just depends on how much torque you got and what surface.

Now that I got LSD it don't spin for an 1/8 mile any more, but it goes sideways pretty good.


My little 4.7 has always been good enough to spin them just by punching it. If I power brake I could just hold the brake enough to get into the RPM's and let off the brake and keep spinning.

I've built 350's and 302's that you could just punch it and let it upshift (without the brake) and it would keep spinning without moving much. Never holding the brakes.


Here's a classic burnout example of the Dak finishing off the stock tires before I went in for the new ones.

I'll admit I'm no expert but have heard of a line loc ?. Locks the front brakes but not the rears. BTW GB, What kind of wheels are on your truck - sharp.

I think line locks lock ALL of the brakes so you don't roll at all when you stage at the race track and preload your torque converter.




OK here is a trick and do at your OWN risk!!!


If you want to do a burnout for a video or something and do it VERY easily you can crawl under the truck and pinch the rubber brake line going from the truck frame to the rear axle. Pinch it with a vise grip.

It is NOT good practice, and do not attempt to DRIVE with it pinched. It would also hurt your line after a while.

But I did try it about 10 yrs ago. Very easy to hold the FRONT brakes only and do a really smokey burnout. Like if you plan on finishing a set of tires, because you will!

Right, a line lock usually just locks the front wheels so pro-drag racers can do a good burnout without burning out their rear brakes. It's also called Roll Control because they also use it as GraphiteDak said, to keep them from rolling off the line.

This is one of my burnouts..I held the brake just a tad and held it as I walked sideways down the raod. It upshifted to 3rd gear.

graphitdak. you can build any motor to spin at the touch of the gas. i can almost do it if im at the right speed and it down shifts good.but i have really loose rear springs and the blocks dont help much either. so i have lot of give when it takes off. but its also an lsd. that think will spinn them with a touch of the gas.

all i do in my truck is rip it. half the time im drivin im gettin sideways. a huge factor in burnouts/powersliding is the ground. if its a newly paved road.. good luck cuz you will have alot of traction. now on an old road thats trunin inro gravel lol needless to say will slide great. even the smalles amount of water will get it spinnin great too. like a little puddle. its all aobut the enisial breaking loose of the tires. like a stubborn bold. as soo as you get them spinnin you can keep them goin as long as you keep your rpms at the power band. with my truck as soon as i shift into 2nd "its an auto" it will catch tracktion. even if i shift at 6k. no matter the road. "unless wet" i just dont have the low end grunt. i think its cuz the cam. or the intake im not sure but it dosent pic up till about 3k
