Subject: My dak may need help?!
IP: Logged

Message:
I was driving to work today when I pulled up to a stop light. I noticed that I couldn't hear my truck like I normally can. I look at my tach and notice that it is fluttering between 400 and 500 rpms. Comming home this happened again, only now it was dark and when the tach would fall the lights would dim slightly. When I would accelerate and then let off, my truck would be real quiet again. Any ideas what could be happening? If it helps, when I stopped at McDonalds, I could smell alot of fumes, I do have a small hole in the exhaust, think that might be what the smell is. Please help guys!!! My dak is sick

This is only my opinion from my experiences with OTHER cars:

-my first thought was your idle is not set high enough.
-my second thought is that your battery might be going bad. But if you're cranking it up fine, then it's probably not that.
-my last guess would be your alternater is going bad. When the alternator is going bad it's not charging the battery correctly, thus you're getting that "dimming" of the lights.
-if it's the alternator, you need to get that checked out soon, otherwise you'll destroy the battery and have to buy a new one.

I'm not exactly sure how to check if the alternator is charging correctly though...

Check all your sensors that go into the TB.. esp the IAC (sp) and the
tps sensor too.

More likely, the lights dim because this is too low an idle for good alternator output. If you want to check your charging system you're looking for about 12 volts before you start it; then about 13.8 volts when running. Not likely the problem though.
How many miles ? Ben makes an excellent suggestion - could be a dirty or bad IAC (idle air control). Also check for a clogged air filter.

A little more to add. When I drive my truck after sitting outside at work or overnight, If I accelerate like normal, the engine seems to vary in sound, almost as if I am hitting the throttle and letting off fast. When I get to 35-40mph and let off, the trucks seems to jerk. And when I pull up to a stopsign, and then give a little more gas to inch up there, that is when the rpms drop off real low. I still don't have a service engine light on yet. Any ideas there????? Does this IAC thing seem to be pretty common on the 318? I had it cleaned about 6 months ago, but am thinking I need a new one or clean it again?

Anybody out there? My poor baby needs a fixing! I am also thinking of storing my Dak and buying a Xb or Caliber for fuel price reasons. Is this worth the investment? my hope is to one day turn this truck into a drag machine. After I park and get a new ride, I will beef the motor up and do what I have to to it to make it a real racer and not a Saturday night special on Main Street!

Neither yet, I have been waiting to get a day off or go to work later. I will get to it Sunday! Could the 'Bucking' be caused by an ignition problem? When I give a little gas and let off and stop, the engine really bogs down and almost kills! I will try the TPS and the IAC and get back. Thanks guys

You know, its the damndest thing. I unplugged the sensors going into the TB and the battery, cleaned the battery posts. Plugged it all in and now my baby is running like a top again!!! There must have been a sensor that was reading bad and messed them all up! I don't know, But to play it safe I am going to get new IAC and TPS. Thanks for all the help guys! Anyone know where to get an IAC or TPS online? Summit has a couple from Holley but it sounds like theirs are for a Holley TB set-up! Looking for one that fits a 97 318

Since its working again, more likely just the connection to one of those sensors (probably TPS for the bucking).
