Yes, thicker oil is not better oil. You should not use a 50 wt. oil. And certainly not a 20w-50 which is too thick at startup and at operating temperature. In most cases it is best to use what the manufacturer recommends.

20W-50 oil will not hurt your engine. But it's a lot heavier than you need. You'll waste a lot of power moving it around. And it puts more strain on the distributer, cam drive, oil pump, etc.

Drain it out, and replace with whatever type of oil you like best, in the proper weight as specified in your owners manual. Replace the oil filter. Smack your brother in the back of your head.

10W-40 is still a bit thick at engine operating temp.
10W-30 would be better if you simply must have a 10W oil.
5W-30 would be better, and 0W-30 I find the best of both worlds: it's nice and thin for the cold starts so the pump can move the oil around better, and it's the right viscosity at operating temperature.

Although, I heard on a forum that if you drive somewhat hard you
may want a thicker oil to last a long time for wear and tear, and for
pulling purposes, etc. So i don't know. that's why im askin.

Once Upon a Time........I had a 4 banger Sonoma.
Being a good American boy, I thought; "If a Little is Good, More MUST be Better."
I ran 50 weight oil. (For many thousand miles, Ky_Man. You're safe)
I learned the heavier oil, in fact, didn't lubricate as well because it didn't get into itty-bitty places, like the tiny sprayers some vehicles have to cool the piston bottom.
I changed to Amsoil 0W-30 oil.
I gained 3 Miles Per Gallon.

Is Amsoil 0W-30 oil any good?
Will it protect well enough?
The engine in my 3.9 Dakota has 525,000 miles that says it does.

Shatto gave the best answer pertaining to the 20-50 oil. Most important is dry starts. Just to thick to get into the tighter running parts of your engine as fast as it would with lighter oil. Syn being the best and fastest to lub everything on startup.

Thanks everyone. I bought some oil today so im going to
change it and the filter tomorrow. I went with the 10w-30
simply because it gets pretty hot here (Southern California) and
i talked to a few people in person (not my brother! ) and they
recommended the 10w-30. So im gunna go with that for now.
Next time around ill be posting on it again and maybe going for
some more performance oriented oil. Cause im not planning on
dragging any time soon, lol. jk. I'm just gunna be driving it to
and from school and occasionally pulling the trailer for the
marching band to competitions etc. BAND NERDS RULE!!!

Thanks!

boomer,

There are no special requirements - however, in much older vehicles or those with very high mileage, it may be advisable to use an engine flush first. This will ensure that the engine is clean and free of any accumulated contaminants which might have an effect on the service life synthetic motor oils.

Provided your engine has been well maintained you can switch at any time.
