My 00 dakota v6 sat for about a year. When I got it started, the oil pressure dropped to 0 psi after about 5 minutes of running. Took the sending switch out and put in a pressure guage and that dropped to 0 psi. I think I need to drop the oil pan and change the pump and clean the screen and pickup tube. Can anyone tell me how to drop the pan? I heard you have to remove the exhaust and jack up the engine. Is this true? Any help would be appreciated.

From the factory service manual, page 9-112:

1. Disconnect negative battery cable at the battery

2. Remove engine oil dispstick.

3. raise the vehicle.

4. Drain engine oil.

5. Remove the exhaust pipe.

6. Remove the left engine to transmission strut.

7. Loosen the right side engine support bracket cushoin through-bolt nut and raise the engine slightly. Remove oil by sliding backaward and out.

8. Remove the one piece gasket.

I've never opened up a Magnum engine, so I could be wrong. But I think the oil pump is driven off the end of the distributer, like a Ford or Chevy V8. If so, you could probably spin the oil pump with a drill motor. If that's possible, I would try that before removing the oil pan.

Just be carefull about removing the distributer. Read the service manual carefully before doing that.

Thanks for the advice .boB. At step seven, does the bolt have to come out and if so how much does the engine need to be raised. It doesn't look like there is alot of space down there.
