I used k&n until my mechanic told me it was 1 million holes traveling at 70 mph and to get rid of it and get something better. He siad dirt is the number 1 engine killer. Just hold one up to the light.

True story. Go back to paper filters and your engine will breathe cleaner air.

mine has sand in the filter box too, but my air flows up past the box thru the filter that leaves all the sand behind.

The best filter, by far, is sold by Amsoil.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should remove
my K&N and go back to paper after reading the
above threads.

I never had the sand problem, just a corn storage
box... I mouse was storing corn for this winters
dinners.. I guess I let the truck set a bit too
long in the barn...

I went back to a paper element after noticing a lot of red grit in my throttle body and a oily sheen (the filter had the factory oiling and was only about 5k miles old). There has been a lot of road construction going on around here and a lot of dusty conditions exist. All that made for a very nasty intake. I'd say the K&N style filters are more suited for highway/city applications where you see very little dust and sand.

K&N drop-in is a total waste of money. Cost me $40 plus $10 for the recharge kit. After 25K miles of driving, I have measured ZERO increase in gas mileage (and they no longer claim that), and no apparent increase in power at all. I could have bought 7 paper filters for the same money, which would have lasted another 100K+ miles, which is all I'll get out of the truck, anyway. And the K&N is an inch smaller in diameter than stock.

When I said sans in the box above I failed to mention the residue in the intake. I also seen no gain in milage or performance. I did notice loud air intake noise at passing gear usage and hard throttle. The sound gave you the impression of power but there really was no gain that I could notice. I now use paper filters. From readings the FRAM AIR CLEANER is a good choice. Just there oil filters are junk. My opinion only.

I have experiemnted with different intake tubes and sorts on my truck for the past 3 yrs.

Gain from K&N air filter = ZERO. Wheather it is the drop in (which is still in my Dak) or the cone style.

I think the K&N FIPK thingie with the tube and that box to hopefully divert HOT RADIATOR AIR from being exposed to the filter is not worth it and if anything just gives many people something they can "Mod" themselves if they don't wat to crack into their engines. No offense. As I am one quick to try things myself, but usually not buying something off of the shelf.

I may have to check into the Amsoil Filter. They seemed to be a company who provides real world testing to back up their products.

Right now I'm back to my STOCK air box where it takes the air from the FENDER. The only difference is I still don't use that flexable rubber hose off of the filter box to the TB. I use a Fernco adapter because it is smooth and a piece of ABS to the TB.
I used some "death tape" (Foil tape with really sticky goo) to seal the intake boxe's inlet to the fender itself sealing it from taking any air from under the hood. That is the key.

Graphite, being you are an HVAC person, would you think some 3" flexible air ducting (steel or alum) would work well going from the airbox to the throttle body? I think I saw some at Lowes or Home Depot for fairly cheap. I really want to get rid of that irritating resonator.

Before I went back to the stock setup I ran a "Quick-fit" Airaid that clips onto the top of the stock airbox lower-housing (replacing the top housing). It also has a pretty good heat shield. I did notice throttle gains with this setup primarily because, as you said, it takes the true "cold air" off the fender rather than recycling hot air off the radiator. I'm probably going to sell mine fairly cheap though as I dare not use with with all the extremely dusty road construction going on... that, and I was just laid off and could use the money for things like food and whatnot. ;)

Theres no question in my mind, the sealed fender entrance is as good as it gets. far better then drawing air from next to the radiator. Lot a spilled heat there as I see it. The fender well hids the incoming air from everything. To complete the job, insulate the rest to the TB. Increased tubing size is a good idea and if you have mods it's a must.

jpkomm, I'd stay away from anything that has ridges in it like flexable piping. It would add turbulances and slow down the air intake.

I just use good ol' ABS piping. It don't melt like people think.

As for the fender inlet, I figure 115 degree outside air in Phoeinx on a hot day is STILL better than what is under the hood. Close to 200 degrees!!!!

Oh yeah. I was wathing the latest PINKS episode on my TiVo. It was one of the shows I watched get filmed, BTW.
Anyway. There was a really STUPID commercial on the recording. FRAM has an intake tube with a Fram filter hanging off of it. Had a bunch of men and women describing the SOUND and the awesome POWER GAINS it gave them!

Each time they played a sound clip of an actual engine, it was the EXHAUST SOUND of a FLOWMASTER LOL!!! NOT the intake sound!!!

What a bunch of idiots! They are selling a tube with a filter just like the RICERS USE and it will take in HOT A$$ air from under the hood.

I recorded the commercial into my computer and will get a chance later to show it to you!

OK. I made the FRAMBOOST commercial into a real player video down to about 1.8 megs in size.

Watch this commercial. I laugh at that sh*t, especially when the one guy says "it really sits me back!" when describing the power gain by the intake tube and open element FRAM filter LOL!!!

All I heard was exhaust noise. How does an air intake affect the exhaust sound? :-P

I notice that my K&N drop-in flows better air at all speeds. I have noticed that the throttle response is a little perkier in my Durango. In my '99 4-banger I noticed mostly at freeway speeds that the engine has a little (not much) more output. Other than that there is no improvement over the full-on paper filter.

What's your left foot doing?

Thanks for the video! That is hilarious, Graphite! I don't care what it is, I'd want some sort of heat shield on it. Those Chevy 327 engines will put you in the back of your seat anyways. I wonder if that was the "surprised tester's truck" or FRAM's demo truck? Is that tube chromed alum or chromed plastic? I can't quite tell. Thanks for the tip on the tube ridging. The one I saw had a "swirling" ridge kinda like a spring. I didn't know if that would help or do the reverse. I don't quite have the means right now to do an ABS tube like you did, but perhaps I will sometime in the future.

Modain, my Flowmaster Super 40 does have a deeper, throatier tone when I put on my Airaid intake compared to my stock setup. It does make it sound "meaner". I've swapped it out a few times and do notice a exhaust sound difference.
