Message:
The fan suddenly will not work in my 01 QC. It was working fine when I shut if off and went into the store; I come out and nothing.

I checked both fuses that relate to ac/hvac and swapped the relay with a known good one and still no blower activity at any selected speed. The compressor comes on when you push the a/c button or put the selector to defrost.

Oddly, the compressor comes on (a/c light also on) with the fan selector at off. Is this enough to determine if the control panel is faulty or rather that it is just a bad blower motor?

Timing sucks as it is supposed to be above 100F tomorrow.

Thanks for your replies.

95% of the time it is a blown resistor block.

about $10 @ dealership

easy to replace, 2 screws

I sure someone will be able to give the location on yours. It maybe inside the cab under the glove box or nearby?? Rectangle block with about 4 0r 5 wires.

On the GenII they are located in the engine compartment firewall, passenger side.

Thanks.

I did find an item mounted to the bottom of the blower housing with 2 screws and five wires. The side opposite the connector is just a metal plate that sticks vertically out of it. I assume this is the resistor block. I put an ohm meter on it and get resistance across all terminals - so I'm not sure if it is bad or not.

I'll see if the dealership has one on hand tomorrow.

If you have a Haynes manual or similiar, locate the harness going to the blower motor and check for voltages at different settings on the fan speed selector. This is the fastest way to determine if you have a bad blower motor or resistor and usually can be done without deconstructing the cab of your truck to do it.

Have the same truck with the same problem. Have you had any luck with the resistor block?

unless things changed, I was under the assumtion if the resister went bad the fan still worked on high. Wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

So many problems .... So little time

I pulled my resistor block and checked it out while I had my dash off last (not fun). I wanted to get a better idea of how it worked. On my 97 it is nothing more than a PCB with resistance coils on the back of it. Nothing much to report other than if it goes "bad" a coil became a fuse point and opened. This in my opinion would not stop the whole thing from working. Sounds like you have other issues. I stand by what I have said before, find the blower motor connector and see if you have DC going to the fan.

If it works only on high speed, it's most likely the resistor block.
If it doesn't work at all and the fuse is good, suspect the ignition switch.

take jumper leads to the fan, if it turns its fine....check the switches themselves in the dash. both the fan speed selector and the switch that controls airflow output. last few problems I fixed were bad terminals on these switches.

I have a 2003 QC and the blower just quit on me one day. I was so frustrated because I had only owned it for a few weeks! Anyway, this site helped me out with that blower resistor mounted under the glove box and for $9 at the dealer, problem solved. Some people say the blower works on high when these go bad, I say it may not work at all.... Just spend the $9 and replace the resistor, I bet that's the problem...
