Just a thought.. but does it sound like valve chatter or maybe lifter noise? My mother's car started making odd-ball diesel noises. It would especially do it when you left off the gas while driving. I ran some engine flush through it before changing the oil and got out a bunch of sludge. Quieted right down.

Well...

Y'know, it's kinda hard to say when you don't tell us what engine you got.

Might be normal for the 3.9. to have an occasional bearing knock when you first start up.
You may well have 8 to 10 pounds of pressure, once it is idling, even though the gauge lies and says 40 lbs, like mine did for 500,000 miles. I tend to think it isn't serious.

When you changed the oil, did you run any sort of flush through it? If it is sludge build-up, it will not drain itself when you change the oil. It is essentially a jelly-like tar buildup. I don't recall a bad water pump ever making a knocking noise.

Is it a knock or more like a clattering? I had a "harmless" clatter that no one could seem to figure out but wrote it off as a quirk for the 97. Yeah, it was the timing belt that had stretched. It came apart on me at about 85mph on the highway and cratered the whole top end. I would carry it to a couple of garages with good reps and see if they come up with the same answer and then go from there.

FYI My new Jasper motor runs like a champ in my 97 CC 3.9 4x4! But it cost me $2500 to have it replaced... The 97 has a problem with timing chain issues from what I have been told so be careful.
