Subject: Rear u-joint help
IP: Logged

Message:
The rear-most u-joint(right in front of the differential) went bad on my 00 Dakota QuadCab, so I got a replacement from the dealer. I'm having a heck of a time getting the old u-joint out. It appears to be a regular outside clip kind, and I've replaced a few in my day. Is there some kind of secret here? I have the driveshaft removed, and its in the workshop. I've tried pressing them out with a big giant vice, but the most I've gotten to move is one cap - and it only moved just a tiny little bit. Do you need a press or some other kind of special tool to do this job? I need to get this done asap - its our only car. Thanks.

have done mine twice already, just drove them out ... they do come out a bit hard. used the old socket and hammer method myself. if they are not greasable units they may have gotten hot and and dried up, which caused it to fail, and freeze in there. my current u-joint is greasable and will see how it lasts. i have a 5inch suspension lift and 33's, been wondering if my driveline angle could be off a bit though and causing mine to fail.

Thanks for verifying that. I wanted to make sure before I gave it another try. So I went back out to it, and this time I used the 4ft "persuader" to turn the vice. PONK!! She broke free.

Thanks
