Subject: Serpentine belt slipping
IP: Logged

Message:
Twice now within the last month the serpentine belt on my 1998 Dodge Dakato V6 slipped off. Anyone ever had this happen and what would be the cause? The first time it happen I changed the belt, but now it happen again. I've also noticed though that the belt wants to slipped toward the engine and then it would stopped. Maybe the tensioner needs replacing? Also, I wasn't driving it when this last time it happen and I'm concerned how far it went without the belt. I'm at work now and the truck is at home so I'm not sure where the water pump is. If the belt drives the water pump then more than likely the engine has been damaged.

the first things i'd check are the tensioner and the idler pulley. if those check out look at the pulley alignment.

you shouldn't have any engine damage if it didn't overheat.

With the belt off, check that the tensioner, any idler pulleys, a/c clutch (if you got a/c) and especially anything driven by the back side of the belt spin freely with no binding or noise. The water pump will not spin freely of course, but should turn easily. If there's binding, the belt will be distorted when the engine runs and the belt will pop right off.
Consider that the tensioner may have weakened and no longer puts enough tension on the belt.
Also, check for accumulations of dirt or other residue on all items the belt contacts. Stuff sometimes gets stuck in the grooves of those pulleys.

Why can't you ask who was driving it if they boiled the engine? If your unabe to get an honest sanswer then shame on you for letting a dishonest person drive your truck. Nobody but myself drives mine ever.

So many problems .... So little time

Does the A/C compressor work, or is it siezed? The compressor also engages in defrost mode, which is any position of your dash knob that directs air to the windshield, regardless of the temperature setting.

On my 98 3.9 the tensioner wears out at the pivot, throwing the pully out of alignment. Also, I had one freeze. Yours may have froze loose.
