Subject: Tranny Problem

Message:
I have a 99 Dakota CC 4x4 with the 5.2L V8 and an automatic tranny. Recently, when I am running at highway speeds with the cruise set the tranny acts like it is about to downshift (about a 100 rmp increase and then settles back). It does this constantly while driving now. It is the same 100 rpm increase that you get when you turn off the overdrive. I get a 100 rpm increase and then the downshift. I believe that I saw on here once something about the torque converter unlocking and locking back up but I'm not sure. I just had the tranny serviced (pan dropped, bands adjusted, filter changed) and it made no differance. Please help!!

Change the Throttle Position Sensor. Your description of the symptoms is classic. The part is held on by 2 screws (very easy to change)and costs aprox. $30 at Napa and other parts stores.

Wouldn't a bad TPS set off a trouble code and turn on the check engine light?

No, it didn't in my case, but I had your symptoms last Christmas. Changed it out and it's been fine since. Used GP Sorensen brand.

Error code only trips if the TPS voltage falls below or goes above set voltages (I think 0.2V and 4.96V). It won't detect dead spots, intermittent and other non-linear behavior.

Replacing it also fixed a hot-start stall problem for me.

Thanks for the help guys. Changed the TPS and seems to be good now. Will know for sure when I go out of town this weekend. Thanks again.
