Hi,
I have had my 94 4x4 318 dak for about a year and a half now...
I just discovered a tiny metal toggle switch under the dash, basically mounted right behind the hood release.
Any idea what it is?

more than likely it is the on/off switch for the alarm system.

Follow the wires and see where they end up. Could be someone installed a simple starter interrupt switch (which doesn't stop you from push-starting if it's a manual transmission).
Or just for kicks, flip the switch and then see what happens.
