Subject: front brake calipers locking up

2000 Dakota R/T 13,700 miles, stored winters. (I am the original purchaser, so mileage is accurate). Front calipers lock up about once a year, after a short drive. Rotors get extremely hot, emit smoke. After cooling down, all is fine for weeks and months on end. Are the calipers corroded in the piston bore? Is water in the fluid boiling and causing expansion, therefore not letting the piston retract? The rear drums have never locked, leading me to believe fluid is OK.

Could be corroded, or a groove worn in the bore. I had a similar issue with a rear brake cylinder a few monthe ago; piston would hang up in the bore once in a while.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Just reread your post - if its not one, but both at the same time, I'd suspect the master cylinder.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

one side at a time, never both at the same time. Thanks for the replies.

same thing happend to me last fall, and as I understand this is a common problem. (however accrording to the dealer, it is something they never heard of befor...right!)

When I replaced the caliper, I noted the piston was made out of phenolic, not metal. It appears that the piston may have gotten cocked in the piston bore whilst trying to return inward. The more you pumped the brakes the more the piston was pushed out and the brakes got tighter and tighter. On mine, the piston would eventually return if let sit for 30 fot 60 minutes.

I replaced both calipers...you must replace both even if only one is FUBAR, and haven't had any problem since. Whilst the calipers were removed I used a Dremal tool to smooth out the edges where the break calipers rest on the spindle. There seemed to be a lot of corrosion. Not sure if this contributed to the problem or not, but it couldn't hurt to polish up the surface where two metal parts are supose to slide.

Hope this helps

Check the brake system equalizer valve ( name may be incorrect) I had front rotors locking; replaced pads, rotors and more than one time. On my 89 this valve is on the frame near the cab. Equalizes pressure evenly to all wheels. No problems when this was replaced.
